  • Abysmal Audio Quality

Can barely hear the guest talk most of the time. Constant background noise

  • Sad to watch the slip

Sad that the editorial staff of this magazine feels it’s appropriate to stoop to “angry old man yells at clouds” style political rants instead of leading the fire service through the fog of today. We’re not here to hear you parrot political commentary that you watched from your recliner last night.

  • Full of great stuff, just be patient.

Usually takes about 5-10 mins at the beginning of each episode before you get to the actual content. Just like most Fire training sessions.

  • Great content the audio

I like this podcast my favorite episode was when you guys had our fire department, recruitment officer, captain, Jason Shanley on it I know that was last year but I decided to leave this review now the audio on that podcast was amazing. Thank you so much for having San Diego Fire Rescue on the podcast. The future podcasts now that I listen to them the audio to be honest with you it does not sound really good let’s try and do better on the audio.

  • Background noise

The content has been very good but almost every episode has some kind of distracting background noise. I can only put up with so much before I just move on to something else. Audio has been inconsistent.

Getting Real About Using AI and Other Nonoperational Behaviors
Q: Could you run through the top five things firefighters and officers tend to get in trouble for and what can be done to prevent them?
The five areas include money-related schemes and unearned compensation, narcotics and drugs, social media misuse, workplace environment issues, and policy gaps around shift trades and overtime; prevention relies on training, employee assistance programs, clear rules, and frontline supervision enforcing those rules.
Getting Real About Using AI and Other Nonoperational Behaviors
Q: Well, Eric, if people have been listening to the show and they're looking for some more information or want to connect with you, how would they go about that?
They can reach out through Career Survival Group (careersurvivalgroup.com) for resources, after-action reports, and training materials; he also offers a year of free access to debrief resources for interested agencies.
After-Action Reviews and Special Event Planning
Q: TOEFL, maybe you can do a little recap on parts one and two, and tonight we're going to talk about, or you're going to talk about the after-action review and how important that is, so maybe a little review and then we'll jump into AARs.
The discussion recaps threat assessment, planning, and the importance of data-driven decisions, then moves into how AARs formalize improvements and ensure every agency knows their role for future events.

Q: What are some ways firefighters can start building that command presence before they're officers?
Observing mentors and practicing clear, concise communication are crucial. By watching how seasoned leaders conduct themselves on and off the fire ground, and by deliberately simplifying initial size-up and keeping questions manageable, a future officer can begin to project calm, control, and credibility even before taking on a higher rank.
In the Books: Episode #18: Pressure Proof: A Guide to Performing Under Stress
Q: Was there an incident or a moment where you realized how important being able to manage stress and overcome those parts of an incident were some of the most important things that you could do?
Yes. Across different ranks, there were experiences that highlighted the stakes of stress—like rescuing a firefighter in smoke on East 22nd Street and later reflecting on how fear and stress could influence actions. Those moments cemented the value of staying calm, communicating, and relying on training to preserve lives.
