  • Approachable and to the point

This podcast is the main source I use to stay up to date on what’s going on in AI tech. It’s very approachable to me as a staff engineer who hasn’t been paying much attention to AI developments and doesn’t have deep knowledge of AI concepts. Many other AI podcasts are difficult to follow but this one uses more high level concepts, and then gets into thoroughly explained details in the technique section that are usually easy to understand.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

LLM Neuralanatomy with David Noel Ng, Forward Deployed Everybody, Preferences Revealed by AI
Q: What motivated your ALM Neural Anatomy experiments and how did you approach testing layers and blocks to find the most effective configuration?
Ng explains beam-search experiments over multiple model layers, testing single and repeated blocks across Llama 2 and Qwen35 families, and using a meta-model to predict performance; the surprising result was that simple repeated blocks often outperform complex multi-block configurations, with layer 33-35 being particularly effective.
LLM Neuralanatomy with David Noel Ng, Forward Deployed Everybody, Preferences Revealed by AI
Q: Can you tell us a little bit about how you went from a PhD in organic chemistry to AI and neurobiology-inspired machine learning work?
David Ng describes a journey from brain-focused biosensor work and optogenetics into AI, driven by the rapid pace of AI development and the parallel between neural data processing and model inference, ultimately applying neuroanatomy concepts to AI architectures and moving into AI product and engineering roles.
Why Models Over-Edit Your Code, Meta Keystroke Surveillance, Interviewing Engineers in the AI Age
Q: Nathan, how did you arrive at the idea of interviewing software engineers in the age of AI, and what did you discover while writing Integrating Software Engineers in the Age of AI?
Nathan explains his journey from philosophy to data science and engineering, how experimental philosophy informs empirical questions about AI, and how take-home tests and realistic coding scenarios can improve hiring signals in an AI-heavy landscape.
