  • Spot on in the technical content!

I have listened to a number of science podcast over the past few yers and either the science was very dumbed down or the speaker launched into a technical conference paper. This hits the right level of “for a scientist who may not be in that area” and the people interviewed are very engaging.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ep 29: Quantitative Spectroscopy and Wave Optics in Infrared Spectroscopy
Q: What challenges arise from microheterogeneity and solid samples for spectroscopic analysis?
Microheterogeneous samples yield spectra that are not consistent, complicating quantitative analysis due to variability in local composition and interactions causing spectral differences.
Ep 29: Quantitative Spectroscopy and Wave Optics in Infrared Spectroscopy
Q: What is the significance of Wolfgang Selmeier's description of the dispersion of the refractive index?
Wolfgang Selmeier derived a formula that accurately describes how the refractive index changes with frequency, which is essential in understanding dispersion phenomena in spectroscopy.
Ep 29: Quantitative Spectroscopy and Wave Optics in Infrared Spectroscopy
Q: Why should one be cautious about extending Beer's Law to higher concentrations?
At higher concentrations, chemical interactions may alter the molar absorption coefficient, and the distance between molecules becomes small, complicating the application of Beer's Law.
Ep 29: Quantitative Spectroscopy and Wave Optics in Infrared Spectroscopy
Q: How does using a reference measurement cancel out the influence of reflection in spectrophotometry?
Using the transmittance of a solution divided by that of the pure solvent allows for the cancellation of multiple reflections at each interface, but this works best for low concentrations.
Ep 29: Quantitative Spectroscopy and Wave Optics in Infrared Spectroscopy
Q: Can you provide an overview of the foundational works by Pierre Bouger and Johan Heinrich Lambert in the 18th century and their impact on quantitative spectroscopy?
Pierre Bouger introduced the concept of absorptive properties, while Johan Heinrich Lambert provided the mathematical framework, crucial for understanding light propagation in mediums. This laid the foundation for quantitative spectroscopy principles.
