Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Middle Way: Discipleship, Sabbaticals, and the Future of the LCMS
Q: How did the table ministry shape your ministry and community outreach?
The table ministry catalyzed leadership development among young volunteers, linked to broader poverty outreach, and became a natural expression of discipleship multiplication that extended beyond Bethlehem to new ministries and partnerships in the community.
The Middle Way: Discipleship, Sabbaticals, and the Future of the LCMS
Q: What are your views on sabbaticals for pastors, and how have you implemented them in your context?
Sabbaticals are beneficial for rest and family time, and district resources can guide a healthy approach; I was supported by my board to take a three-month sabbatical to rest, travel with family, and come back revitalized, which then empowered others during the interim.
The Middle Way: Discipleship, Sabbaticals, and the Future of the LCMS
Q: What are the top two or three things you thought you would be doing as a pastor, and what has surprised you most in practice?
I expected to focus on traditional pastoral activities like preaching and visitation, but over time I've realized the core work is mentoring others, developing a multiplication of leaders, and mobilizing laypeople to carry the mission forward through discipleship and leadership development.
Second-Chair Leadership: Hard Conversations That Matter
Q: What is Kindle and why is it important for second-chair ministry leaders?
Kindle is the Carpanko Institute's initiative to nurture and develop leadership excellence for second-chair ministry leaders, expanding from DCEs to laity and staff, with a focus on sustainable leadership, mentorship, and practical tools for serving faithfully.
Is Pastoral Formation "Adiaphora?" -- Dr. Biermann Explains
Q: What words of wisdom do you give to pastors in speaking into cultural issues?
pastors should speak through the lens of faithful Christian witness, avoiding equating religious faith with political agendas, and recognize the two realms of church and state while engaging culture humbly and truthfully.
