After 9/11, George W. Bush launched a global War on Terror. What followed was an unprecedented expansion of American power, from Guantánamo Bay to drone strikes, mass surveillance to the weaponisation of the financial system. Asked when it would end, Vice-President Dick Cheney replied: ‘Not in our lifetime.’ Two decades later, we’re still living in its shadow. Aftershock: The War on Terror is a ne... more

‘Follow the money.’ That was George W. Bush’s directive to the US Treasury after 9/11. Choking off al-Qaida’s finances proved complicated — but what happened next went far beyond that. A small team of Treasury bureaucrats weaponised the global econom... more
The events of 9/11 exposed cracks in the US intelligence apparatus. In response, the National Security Agency built the most extensive surveillance system in history. What was sold as a counterterrorism measure was turned on American citizens and the... more
The wars in Afghanistan and Iraq created a dilemma for the Bush administration: what to do with the thousands of detainees captured during the War on Terror. John Yoo, a White House lawyer, came up with a new legal argument that allowed detainees to ... more
After the Twin Towers fell, Donald Rumsfeld reportedly told President Bush: ‘Now we can do Iraq.’ The neo-conservatives said it would be easy: American troops would be greeted with flowers and sweets. But the occupation quickly unravelled, leaving Ir... more

Not the Ken Burns version.
Wonderfully written, this podcast weaves together archival material and new interviews, requiring us to reflect on the recent past to understand our current politics. Really Intelligent, compelling and insightful work. Thank you LRB.
I am so appreciative of the voices, viewpoints, and clarity of this podcast. It’s a thoughtful reminder of where the US was and where we still seem to be. Timely.
the tipping point for so much that has happened since. well told.
Wow - what an opening. Fantastic first episode, can’t wait for the second.
Excellent. Wish I’d known about LRB in 2001- been hoping for accessible insightful critiques on the “war on terror “ concept for a long time
I was enjoying this in terms of content but had to stop as much of the narration had an underscore with a repeated click like fluff under a vinyl needle. It was so distracting and unpleasant that I couldn’t continue. Why do podcasts do this? Over-designing the sound detracts from what is said and prevents audio-sensitive listeners like me from listening. This is a disability issue and responsible broadcasts should make available a version without underscore for those of us with hypersensitivity.... more
Post 9/11, it was chilling to see the construction of a national US narrative unhindered by inquiry. Everyone had to live within the false reality of the government line; finding out something contradictory could cost you dearly. We witnessed the surge of a political culture underpinned by the power of the lie.
Looking forward to more of this. Grateful for LRB’a coverage!
I cried during the first part of the first episode. All these years later it’s still upsetting. Even though the sound of Bush’s voice gives me PTSD, I’m going to listen to the rest of the series. I’m interested in hearing an objective point view of what happened to this country.
