Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Simulation as an Enabler: Pan Michaleris & Erik Denlinger on the Evolution of Additive FEA
Q: Where do you see PanX fitting into the qualification and regulatory landscape, especially for aerospace, defense, and medical applications?
PanX supports temperature control, dwell-time optimization, and material-property considerations to expand process windows, with recognition that qualification will require regulatory collaboration and potentially government partnerships to adopt simulation-guided approaches.
Simulation as an Enabler: Pan Michaleris & Erik Denlinger on the Evolution of Additive FEA
Q: What are the current core outputs of PanX, and how should engineers use them in practice today?
PanX provides outputs like predicted interlayer temperatures, distortion, and stress states; the goal is to move from analyst-level consumption to direct usage by design and manufacturing engineers, feeding results back into the build file automatically.
Simulation as an Enabler: Pan Michaleris & Erik Denlinger on the Evolution of Additive FEA
Q: Can you give us a bit of a background on simulation in manufacturing and how it got us to where we are today?
I started as a professor and moved into startups, using simulation to shorten design and build cycles in additive manufacturing, and now we're automating not just prediction but also prescriptive improvements within the print processing workflow.
AI Update in Additive Manufacturing: Design, Process, Workforce and Industry impact
Q: What were some of your more surprising experiences with these tools?
A standout experience involved using a Grasshopper/Rhino plug-in (Raven) to generate a parametric Visa Mount with a camera tripod attachment in a single shot, purely from natural language prompts and without manual UI interaction, illustrating how NLP-driven geometry can rapidly produce workable, adjustable designs.
AI Update in Additive Manufacturing: Design, Process, Workforce and Industry impact
Q: So maybe give us your current high level perception. So where is AI in the additive sector today?
AI in additive manufacturing has progressed from hype to practical capability, with improvements in language models, visual models, and surrogate modeling that enable text-to-geometry, design intent capture, and data-driven experimentation. While not yet delivering full design autonomy, it is increasingly useful for reducing repetitive work and enabling more ambitious design exploration, provided we also invest in data quality, physics-based training data, and standardized metadata.
