Excellent advice and a clear understanding of special education. The explanations were accurate, and easy to understand, making complex topics much clearer.

  • Science of Reading

This episode on the science of reading was so frustrating to listen to. Please, if you’re going to make a podcast episode, do it about a topic that you know and can explain. Thinking that science of reading is primarily about phonics instruction shows that you didn’t read that book and that you don’t understand what the science of reading is.

The episode frames phonics instruction and development of background knowledge and vocabulary as an either/or, and that view is wildly inaccurate. Simply... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Charter Chatter Pt. 2
Q: How do you handle accommodations for students with IEPs?
Accommodations are often built into the general culture (extensions, flexible timelines) and supported by a team approach, with content-area teachers helping rather than isolating specialized services.
Charter Chatter Pt. 2
Q: What does your charter school focus on?
We focus on the 10 common principles, including personalization, hands-on learning, and standards-based progress; students are assessed through exhibitions and juried presentations rather than traditional finals.
Mail Bag
Q: Where does the responsibility fall, or what is the procedure for a student who requires a 504 accommodation plan, but is placed in a private school by parents?
The home district remains responsible for generating a 504, but neither the public nor private school is obligated to implement it; however, 504 plans can influence accommodations like extended time for standardized tests, and private schools may reference the 504 for planning and documentation.
Mail Bag
Q: So there are actually two questions. So the first one is, so this person has a family who has maintained their eligibility for special education but denied services.
The panel discusses that even if a family leans toward keeping eligibility, the team must examine the full data beyond progress in private settings, including attendance, behavior, social interactions, grades, and whether the private setting provides comparable supports, before determining continued eligibility or need for services.
My Brother's Keeper: Interview with David Tynes
Q: How did the Saturday program begin and how has it evolved?
The program started small before I took over, and my connections allowed me to grow it into a comprehensive fitness and recreation initiative for people of all ages with disabilities.
