That’s as good as philosophy lectures get.
This is a great survey of Western philosophy!!!
Thank you for whomever uploaded these lectures. What a treasure!
Dr. Holmes is excellent (especially when he rolls his R’s). I can see his spit flying into the front row of students as he teaches with such passion!
He brings a seriously thoughtful approach without asserting views and unfair bias (as many Christian minds have). Great care is taken to represent historical elements while not neglecting the relevance of the works for today. I’ve been intermittently zoning out and intensely zooming into snippets I gather from these glimpses of complex & abstract thinking out loud.
Prof was a little off-putting @ first, but eventually you’ll just lean into the wacky old man stereotype he paints in your head.
Although at some point in an episode about Whitehead’s Process he goes off on a kid named Ryan.
Not exactly sure what Ryan did wrong (sleeping? phone? What yr is this even?), but the Prof’s reaction was a little much.

The professor clearly knows the subject deeply but rambles and does not have a structured style of presentation. Very charming if you know the material but likely confusing to a beginner.

These lectures, to me, set the standard for how history of Philosophy should be taught. Dr. Holmes possessed a deep reservoir of knowledge and shared it with great clarity, fairness, and intelligence, always stressing how to interrogate the great thinkers critically, as they interrogated themselves... I go back to these repeatedly. Thank you, Wheaton College.
A masterpiece from a master mind!!
