  • I am sorry Jesse

Jesse, I am sorry but, I did the creepy thing and listened to all the previous episodes. I was in too deep when you first said not to do that but I had to finish them all.

I’ve been using YNAB since the start of 2023 and have since payed off nearly $10,000 of medical and CC debt since. I got my mom plugged in and turned her financial life around as well. I am currently working on my last debt (my car) and aging my money. All while feeling the most financially free and comfortable ever. Your pro... more

  • YNAB is better than this podcast

Not enjoyable to listen to. They might be going for quick easy to digest bites of info but I am getting pointless and not worth my time. Might work as TikToks but I was left wanting more.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ask Jesse: Ditching Credit Cards, Leasing Teslas, What Jesse Eats for Breakfast
Q: Can you talk about revisiting the Tesla conversation with your therapist and what that revealed about money and status?
Revisiting the Tesla discussion with my therapist highlighted how pride and signaling can unintentionally steer financial decisions. Recognizing this helped me separate emotional fulfillment from financial sense, leading to more intentional choices about luxury purchases and what money is actually for.
Ask Jesse: Ditching Credit Cards, Leasing Teslas, What Jesse Eats for Breakfast
Q: Do you anticipate keeping this debit-card-only strategy long-term, or is it something you would adjust?
I expect to continue using debit for the foreseeable future because it keeps spending tangible and simple, though I acknowledge occasional exceptions if circumstances require. The key is that it aligns with a clear understanding of what money is for and prevents unnecessary debt, even if not perfect for everyone.
Ask Jesse: Pre-Tax vs Roth IRA's, Giving Dollars Jobs in Retirement, Saving for Multiple Goals at Once
Q: What would you do in a scenario where you're not sure if you'll retire yet but want to stay prepared for future expenses like home repairs or vacations?
Jesse emphasizes forecasting long-term needs, creating a future budget that includes big-ticket items, and keeping a mindset of investing or saving for future needs while maintaining liquid cash for near-term requirements.
Ask Jesse: Pre-Tax vs Roth IRA's, Giving Dollars Jobs in Retirement, Saving for Multiple Goals at Once
Q: How should someone approach budgeting if they want to fund two new cars, a home, and a Roth IRA at the same time?
He recommends assigning specific jobs to dollars over multiple time horizons, using a forward-looking plan to determine how much to save for each goal, and suggests prioritizing Roth or retirement funding if it aligns with long-term priorities, while acknowledging individual cash situations and potential flexibility.
Ask Jesse: Pre-Tax vs Roth IRA's, Giving Dollars Jobs in Retirement, Saving for Multiple Goals at Once
Q: Curious as to your take on pre-tax versus Roth for higher-income earners.
Jesse explains that you can't predict future tax rates, so a diversified approach is prudent: prioritize employer matches first, then consider a mix of pre-tax and Roth to hedge against unknown future taxes, and carefully decide based on whether you expect your tax rate to be lower in retirement.
