在這一集節目中，聖嚴法師引用了古代德山宣鑒禪師的故事，說明德山禪師生理上儘管疼痛，心理上卻沒有怨恨、沒有無奈、沒有想要逃避的想法。有病和無病的心境，完全相同，能痊癒固然很好，醫不好也沒什麼關係，因此有病等於沒病。如果自己生病，或者親友生病，也可以用這種方式加以安慰或勸導，不但可袪除自己向病魔投降的陰影，也能對病友有所啟示和幫助。
