  • Great

This is a great podcast - intelligent, well researched and interesting. Interviews with authors who write about film. It’s not a podcast rehashing tired Hollywood gossip, but discusses development of film and many key contributors. I have been reading many of these writers most of my life and listening to interviews with Molly Haskell, Jeanne Basinger, Joseph McBride etc talking about Preston Sturges, Billy Wilder, Coen Brothers and so much more is wonderful.

The long form interviews are fascinating, and Mr. Bleasdale is a sharp interlocutor. Hats off to him for filling this niche!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Stephen Volk on Gothic, GhostWatch and Weird Reality
Q: How did the production handle the intimate, literary focus versus audience appeal of horror?
He explains that the script aimed to be a sliver of the original figures, not a definitive biography, and that the drama was designed to be about the birth of horror as a form, using archetypes rather than strict historical accuracy.
Stephen Volk on Gothic, GhostWatch and Weird Reality
Q: What sparked the idea for Gothic and its framing as a work about the birth of horror?
Volk describes reading Heritage of Horror and the concept of a “catalyst” night where Byron, Shelley, Polidori, and others brainstorm ghost stories, which then became the seed for a dramatic treatment exploring archetypal horror figures.
Adrian Martin on Filmmakers Thinking
Q: But you say in the introduction this book came from like a part of your teaching. Is that correct?
Yes, the book grew out of a teaching subject at ECFE in Spain, which aimed to introduce students to Filmmakers Thinking by including multiple forms of filmmaker-facing documents beyond traditional cinema essays.
Partially Devoured with Daniel Kraus
Q: What makes Night of the Living Dead such a landmark beyond its scares?
Its structural restraint—single location, few characters—forces attention to dialogue, decisions, and social themes, while the ending reframes the film as a social commentary as much as a horror piece.
Ashley Clark and The World of Black Film
Q: Would you recommend a film book for our listeners?
Yes. I recommend African Cinema, Politics & Culture by Manthia Diawara as a thoughtful overview of the industrial conditions informing African cinema, followed by works that illuminate the birth of African authorship in film and the conditions under which filmmakers like Ousmane Sembène worked.
