  • Great

This is a great podcast - intelligent, well researched and interesting. Interviews with authors who write about film. It’s not a podcast rehashing tired Hollywood gossip, but discusses development of film and many key contributors. I have been reading many of these writers most of my life and listening to interviews with Molly Haskell, Jeanne Basinger, Joseph McBride etc talking about Preston Sturges, Billy Wilder, Coen Brothers and so much more is wonderful.

  • A wonderful, informative look at film and the people who write about it

Film has long been my escape from the drudgery and depression of the real world; now, this great podcast has become another means of accessing film in all its wonder and complications, from experts who truly know their stuff. The long form interviews are fascinating, and Mr. Bleasdale is a sharp interlocutor. Hats off to him for filling this niche!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

From the Archive: Ed Zwick
Q: What did you learn from working in television that you carried into your film work?
Television taught them to structure narratives with ongoing character development and episodic stakes, which they applied to feature films by building deeper ensemble dynamics and long-form character arcs.
From the Archive: Ed Zwick
Q: How did your collaboration with Marshall influence your early career and the projects you chose to pursue?
The partnership provided stability and a shared platform to pursue ambitious projects, allowing them to keep a company together while navigating the risks of Hollywood, which in turn enabled them to pursue larger, more ambitious stories.
J.G. Ballard on Film
Q: Crash was controversial on release. How do you view Cronenberg's approach to the source material?
Cronenberg's version reins in the book's transgressive edge with a cooler, more clinical gaze, turning sexuality into something colder and more distanced, which some feel dilutes Ballard while others appreciate the discipline it imposes on the material.
J.G. Ballard on Film
Q: What's your take on Empire of the Sun, Brian?
It's a key example of Ballardian themes filtered through Spielberg's wartime epic lens, where the film's spectacle can both highlight and complicate Ballard's underlying trauma and irony, especially in how trauma is embedded in the environment and the gaze.
Acting and Performance in Hitchcock
Q: But can I ask you, first of all, if you sort of give us a general introduction to how you got involved with the project and you probably do a better job of introducing the book itself than I've just done.
The guests describe how a Hitchcock conference sparked the project, the symposium that evolved into a written volume, and the ongoing collaboration that led to the final book, emphasizing the scarcity of critical writing on acting in Hitchcock compared with other aspects of his work.
