Wouldn’t it be great if your child came with an owner’s manual? A how-to book on how to raise your child? And if your child came with such a manual, wouldn’t it be helpful to have someone walk you through it, making that owner’s manual come alive? Michael Gurian and Tim Wright serve as your guides through what they believe is the owner’s manual for your child: Your child’s brain. While the brain d... more

  • A-MA-ZING and VITAL information

Really! As a mom of 2 boys and a girl, as a teacher, as a partner to a man. Simply and plainly VITAL information for any human who interacts with other humans.

  • Hate speech

Just listened to the last episode where 90% of it is about the host/guest’s biased opinion on what’s happening in the Middle East. What a waste of time.

  • Hmmmm….

As a parent and mental health professional who works with children I generally find the ideas presented in this podcast to be current and spot on. However the last episode on competitiveness references all ‘he’ and ‘his’. I know the question involved a boy, but it became very irritating. C’mon, guys! It’s 2023. This is an issue with girls now, too! Let’s move out of that box!

  • Not So Random

When I work up wide awake and saw that it was only 11:44pm, there was nothing else to do but stay up. I “stumbled” upon this podcast and found it helpful for a few reasons. First, unity in parenting is important. Addressing behavior appropriately is equally important (redeeming v. punishing). Having a support system is valuable. Using the right language is key to helping, rather than exasperating a situation. Thank you Tim and Michael. Being from the era when these issues were dealt with inappro... more

  • Interesting!

Interesting to hear a little of the brain science behind certain behaviors. Love that they take listener questions and really do a deep dive for that person, but also make it relatable to all listeners. Looking forward to hearing more.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Best of: The Glass-Half-Empty Child
Q: How can we tell if a child's negative thinking is simply a temperament or something more serious like depression, and what steps should we take if there are warning signs?
Monitor for signs such as social withdrawal, loss of interest, or changes in sleep and appetite. If depression seems likely, seek professional evaluation while continuing supportive parenting practices that emphasize action and positive engagement; early intervention can prevent long-term issues.
Best of: The Glass-Half-Empty Child
Q: Is it normal for kids to be like, I hate life, and how should I respond when this attitude persists?
A combination of innate temperament and environmental factors can drive a child toward negativity, but parents can influence outcomes by reframing thoughts into action, highlighting positive results, and guiding the child toward constructive activities; if the negativity persists or changes significantly, assess for trauma or depression.
Best Of: A Child's First Phone with Guest Catherine Pearlman
Q: What are your recommendations for families navigating screen time for eight-to-ten-year-olds?
Limit gaming on school nights, set clear daily on-screen time targets, ensure most learning is kinesthetic/off-screen, and keep devices out of bedrooms to reduce late-night usage.
Best Of: A Child's First Phone with Guest Catherine Pearlman
Q: What is the main premise of your approach to digital responsibility for children?
The book promotes a proactive, stage-appropriate framework that educates kids about safe online behavior from a young age, while giving parents concrete rules and non-negotiable boundaries to protect development.
Best of: Mother's Day with Guest Sara Olsher
Q: How did Sara start Mighty and Bright and what problem does it solve?
Sara created a co-parenting calendar after observing how visual schedules reduced her daughter's anxiety; Mighty and Bright expands this into a broader program helping kids cope with transitions.
