Wouldn’t it be great if your child came with an owner’s manual? A how-to book on how to raise your child? And if your child came with such a manual, wouldn’t it be helpful to have someone walk you through it, making that owner’s manual come alive? Michael Gurian and Tim Wright serve as your guides through what they believe is the owner’s manual for your child: Your child’s brain. While the brain d... more

  • A-MA-ZING and VITAL information

Really! As a mom of 2 boys and a girl, as a teacher, as a partner to a man. Simply and plainly VITAL information for any human who interacts with other humans.

  • Hate speech

Just listened to the last episode where 90% of it is about the host/guest’s biased opinion on what’s happening in the Middle East. What a waste of time.

  • Hmmmm….

As a parent and mental health professional who works with children I generally find the ideas presented in this podcast to be current and spot on. However the last episode on competitiveness references all ‘he’ and ‘his’. I know the question involved a boy, but it became very irritating. C’mon, guys! It’s 2023. This is an issue with girls now, too! Let’s move out of that box!

  • Not So Random

When I work up wide awake and saw that it was only 11:44pm, there was nothing else to do but stay up. I “stumbled” upon this podcast and found it helpful for a few reasons. First, unity in parenting is important. Addressing behavior appropriately is equally important (redeeming v. punishing). Having a support system is valuable. Using the right language is key to helping, rather than exasperating a situation. Thank you Tim and Michael. Being from the era when these issues were dealt with inappro... more

  • Interesting!

Interesting to hear a little of the brain science behind certain behaviors. Love that they take listener questions and really do a deep dive for that person, but also make it relatable to all listeners. Looking forward to hearing more.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Best of: The Boys Who Takes Pictures of Butts
Q: What are your first thoughts about the situation with the five-year-old taking pictures of butts?
The hosts acknowledge normal developmental curiosity about bodies, distinguish it from sexual behavior, and emphasize practical steps: remove the device, set clear boundaries, monitor for any signs of abuse, involve caregivers and teachers, and address the child's personality with consistent, age-appropriate conversations and consequences.
Best of: Listener Question—The Sleepwalking Daughter
Q: What should the family do about the sleep issues given the child's sleepwalking and eight to ten hours of sleep—how do we approach this practically?
Focus on sleep hygiene and gradual adjustments: establish a consistent nightly routine starting around 8:45 pm with processing conversations about the day, consider moving bedtime later if the child isn't ready for 8 pm, and ensure a stable morning wake time. Use calming rituals like reading or singing a comforting song, and experiment with diet and light exercise in the day. If sleepwalking persists or sleep quality remains questionable, consult a pediatrician or sleep specialist.
Best of: Listener Question—To Win or Not to Win
Q: The mom asks whether intervening early in her two sons' rough play may be preventing brain maturity and what to do about it.
Michael explains that intervention should be limited to moments of real danger; otherwise, allow play to unfold to let the brain learn through experiential, sensory processes, then have ongoing values discussions to guide behavior without overprotecting.
#396: Building Strong Readers with Guest Dr. Elizabeth DeWitt
Q: Now, you've talked about this, connecting writing with reading. I'm guessing that we're talking here about books where I might have a test on it or the teacher is going to ask me questions about it, versus reading for pleasure.
Handwriting supports memory and comprehension; combining handwriting with reading activities strengthens learning, and phonics within a science-backed framework is essential for building reading skills.
Best of: How to be a Dad to a Teenage Daughter
Q: Am I crazy? I feel like sports should be a natural outlet for aggression, but others think it's dangerous or violent. How should a parent navigate this when their four-year-old is just starting soccer?
Start with the reality that aggression is a normal part of play and sports, but it must be channeled and supervised. Use teaching moments to differentiate acceptable on-field aggression from crossing lines, involve both parents, and consider leagues that emphasize skill-building and safety over winning at all costs.
