Wouldn’t it be great if your child came with an owner’s manual? A how-to book on how to raise your child? And if your child came with such a manual, wouldn’t it be helpful to have someone walk you through it, making that owner’s manual come alive? Michael Gurian and Tim Wright serve as your guides through what they believe is the owner’s manual for your child: Your child’s brain. While the brain d... more

  • A-MA-ZING and VITAL information

Really! As a mom of 2 boys and a girl, as a teacher, as a partner to a man. Simply and plainly VITAL information for any human who interacts with other humans.

  • Hate speech

Just listened to the last episode where 90% of it is about the host/guest’s biased opinion on what’s happening in the Middle East. What a waste of time.

  • Hmmmm….

As a parent and mental health professional who works with children I generally find the ideas presented in this podcast to be current and spot on. However the last episode on competitiveness references all ‘he’ and ‘his’. I know the question involved a boy, but it became very irritating. C’mon, guys! It’s 2023. This is an issue with girls now, too! Let’s move out of that box!

  • Not So Random

When I work up wide awake and saw that it was only 11:44pm, there was nothing else to do but stay up. I “stumbled” upon this podcast and found it helpful for a few reasons. First, unity in parenting is important. Addressing behavior appropriately is equally important (redeeming v. punishing). Having a support system is valuable. Using the right language is key to helping, rather than exasperating a situation. Thank you Tim and Michael. Being from the era when these issues were dealt with inappro... more

  • Interesting!

Interesting to hear a little of the brain science behind certain behaviors. Love that they take listener questions and really do a deep dive for that person, but also make it relatable to all listeners. Looking forward to hearing more.

Best of: Mother's Day with Guest Sara Olsher

Sara created a co-parenting calendar after observing how visual schedules reduced her daughter's anxiety; Mighty and Bright expands this into a broader program helping kids cope with transitions.
Best of: Mother's Day with Guest Sara Olsher
Q: Why is it important to talk to kids about tragedies and illnesses, even when they are young?

Best of: Listener Question-Gender Dysphoria
Q: If you've got a child in your family like this writer does, who thinks he may be transgender, do you then with children start with the assumption of gender dysphoria and see where that leads?
Yes, clinicians typically start from a position of evaluating for gender dysphoria while considering other factors, and they diagnose accordingly to insurance and treatment frameworks, emphasizing careful, gradual assessment and therapy rather than immediate transition.
Best of: Listener Question-Gender Dysphoria
Q: Do you have any recommendations on what we can do to help him with his gender dysphoria?
The recommended path is to seek a qualified gender-dysphoria-informed therapist, focus on age-appropriate therapy, assess for co-occurring issues like trauma or attachment gaps, and avoid hormones or irreversible interventions until adolescence, using family therapy to support attachment and self-understanding.
Best of: The Boys Who Takes Pictures of Butts
Q: What are your first thoughts about the situation with the five-year-old taking pictures of butts?
The hosts acknowledge normal developmental curiosity about bodies, distinguish it from sexual behavior, and emphasize practical steps: remove the device, set clear boundaries, monitor for any signs of abuse, involve caregivers and teachers, and address the child's personality with consistent, age-appropriate conversations and consequences.
