  • Evidence based recommendations

This is my favorite long form fitness podcast. Phillip’s recommendations are based on “engineering, evidence, and,” uh, excellence, no, energy, not that, encouragement. Dang! I never can remember the third “E.” Oh well, they all fit. No matter what your experience level, Phillip can help you progress.

  • Interesting Ideas!!

These podcasts can help everyone with a fresh perspective and practical ways to achieve results! So far I’ve taken away the idea of how lifting more and concentrating on protein intake helps with that elusive metabolism that seems to disappear when you get older. I look forward to listening in on more creative approaches!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

5 Signals That Your Body's "Off" Even When Your Labs Are Normal (Dr. Stephen Cabral) | Ep 476
Q: What are the five signals and how do they guide treatment?
The five signals are digestion, energy, sleep, mood/mental clarity, and skin/hair/nails. Each signal points to a core physiological axis (gut health, hormonal balance, nutrient status, autonomic nervous system), and addressing underlying deficiencies or toxicities—often through targeted gut protocols, balanced nutrition, sleep optimization, and stress management—helps avoid chasing isolated supplements or medications.
Brain Fitness, Micro-Habits, and Your Health (Thoryn Stephens) | Ep 472
Q: How do you determine the right number of microhabits to start with and ensure they stick?
Tailor the number of microhabits to the individual, often starting with a small set (potentially 1-3) and expanding as adherence improves; use feedback, non-negotiables, and intrinsic/extrinsic rewards to drive engagement.
Brain Fitness, Micro-Habits, and Your Health (Thoryn Stephens) | Ep 472
Q: What foundational pillars should people start with, and how do microhabits fit in?
Start with six pillars (nutrition, exercise, sleep, stress, connection, metabolic health) and add small, structured microhabits that support goals without overwhelming the person; measure progress with simple, non-intrusive tracking.
Brain Fitness, Micro-Habits, and Your Health (Thoryn Stephens) | Ep 472
Q: Is consistency more of a brain/cognitive issue than a pure behavior problem?
The guest suggests that while behavior is important, cognitive load, motivation, and decision-making processes significantly shape adherence, and thus addressing cognitive factors can improve consistency.
Why Lifting Weights 6 Days a Week Won't Help You Lose Fat (Ben Brown) | Ep 460
Q: What is the point of exercise?
Exercise is essential for life and metabolic function, but its role in fat loss is nuanced; it should be viewed as part of a broader lifestyle strategy that supports metabolic health rather than simply as a calories-out lever.
