  • The best single HR/Marco Altini Podcast I’ve heard

’ve heard Marco on podcast probably a half dozen times over the past 10 years.

Your interview with him was absolutely the best. Practical, pragmatic, actionable while still including the deep dive background on HRV. Still, understandable for all audiences. Something in here for everyone!

  • Well worth your time!

If you’re an athlete, or simply someone who is getting a little bit older, and you want to learn as much as possible about how to create more vitality, good health, and ultimately extend the amount of years you can feel great and perform even better, this podcast is for you. Joe asks all the right questions and all the guests i’ve heard so far are great as well. Highly recommended!

  • Interviewer needs to shut up

I started to follow this show because a grand masters cyclist, the premise was relatable, good topics and good guests. But —- the interviewer can’t shut up and let the guests answer his questions.

The show turns into all about him and his personal concerns. It’s like he is using his show to get his show to get free, personal consultations. Listen elsewhere

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

#176 | Truth in Cycling | Jim Martin PhD
Q: Is there a 'best' pedaling technique that athletes should adopt?
The data show that instructions to pedal in a circular or pulling-up fashion tend to increase metabolic cost and reduce efficiency for the same power, and natural self-selected technique generally performs better; individual variation exists, but trying to force a universal technique often backfires.
#176 | Truth in Cycling | Jim Martin PhD
Q: What is your take on crank length and its effect on power?”
Across a wide range, crank length does not meaningfully affect maximal sprint power or endurance power; the body adapts, and the metabolic cost is similar. Shorter cranks can improve aerodynamics, while longer cranks may alter saddle height and joint angles, but neither guarantees more power.
#178 | Athletic Longevity isn't Easy | Brendan Egan, PhD
Q: What role does sleep play in recovery for older athletes?
Sleep is a critical recovery factor that can significantly affect performance and adaptation; improving sleep quality and consistency can improve recovery timelines and health markers, making it a high-priority focus for aging athletes.
#178 | Athletic Longevity isn't Easy | Brendan Egan, PhD
Q: How should someone structure their week to maintain multiple fitness components?
Structure should consider time available and the key fitness features to maintain, combining strength, cardio, and skill elements within a periodized plan that includes gradual progression and regular deload weeks to manage fatigue and injury risk.
#178 | Athletic Longevity isn't Easy | Brendan Egan, PhD
Q: What is the core idea behind athletic longevity as described in the episode?
Athletic longevity is about maintaining function, coordination, and athletic capability across a long life by balancing training stimulus with adequate recovery, prioritizing maintenance over peak intensity, and using periodization to manage load and injury risk.
