  • Disappointed loyal listener

I have been listening to Fast Talk for several years. I have found it invaluable as a reliable source of information on training related science. However I was very disappointed in the episode on gut health and micro biomes. Although I have some knowledge of the topic, this episode was too science heavy. It was also too heavy on the use of probiotics at the expense of what might constitute a good diet for gut health. To cap it all the last few minutes were an open door for the guest of the show ... more

  • I love that they're having this discussion and I don't think that they're idiots, but the red flags in the first study are just insanely loud. The paper makes it clear that causality is not even close to proven, and even says retrospective in the title, but the discussion starts right off with the clickbait about this being applied prospectively, which is just confusing for people who don't know the difference between an experiment and a AI generated regression

  • superb

    Entertaining and very informative.

I feel i can trust what these people say - its not just the latest fad but information driven by science and years of experience.

  • Not trustworthy

Has a scientific vibe about it but the hosts aren’t able to distinguish what makes something science. One of the hosts is a naturopath, who constantly refers to herself as a doctor, apparently allowed in the USA. I didn’t realise until I listened to them interview another naturopath also a ‘doctor’

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

419: How to Lose Weight in Season Without Hurting Performance
Q: What is a safe target weight for an endurance athlete losing weight in-season?
Targets should be modest and individualized, typically around 0.25 to 0.5% of body weight per week, with most athletes focusing on maintaining fueling around workouts and tracking monthly trends rather than chasing aggressive weekly changes.
417: What Makes the Pedal Stroke So Unique, and Why Strength Training Is So Important
Q: So Dr. Brickson, I know before we dive into this, there's some terms that you need to define for the conversation.
We define recruitment, activation, and synchronization: recruitment is the order in which motor units are recruited from slow‑twitch to fast‑twitch; activation is the firing rate and calcium dynamics that elevate force; synchronization is how closely the different motor unit groups come online, improving efficiency.
406: Tech vs. Wild – How Augmented Reality, GPS, and Other Technologies Are Reshaping the Way We Adventure, with Chris Burkard
Q: How do you maintain your level of stoke, even amidst some of the most brutal conditions?
I find myself drawn to those experiences because they strip away the irrelevant aspects of life, helping me see what's truly important and appreciate the internal space.
403: Celebrating American Cycling Success in 2025, with Jim Miller
Q: What new programs or strategies are being implemented in USA Cycling?
USA Cycling is developing a team focused on medical, sports sciences, and technology.
403: Celebrating American Cycling Success in 2025, with Jim Miller
Q: How are you handling the challenge of discovering new talent?
Talent identification on the road is challenging; mountain biking is performing well with juniors.
