  • Bright Host

Long time fan of show. Larry tackles divisive topics , but leads with compassion. I’d recommend this show to critical thinkers, but, selfishly, I don’t want tooo many people knowing about it bc it has become my cheat sheet for having thoughtful things to share at dinner! 🤫 I like that Larry and his guests are 10x more accomplished & educated than 90% of the other brainiac “intellectual” podcasters out there , but without any of the elitist snark. Larry doesn’t lecture. Or talk down. He lea... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Containing the New Axis Powers: China, Russia and Iran
Q: What is the core strategic idea for handling the Eurasian theater, and why focus on Eurasia as a single region?
Cropsey argues that treating Eurasia as a single, interconnected strategic space allows the U.S. to leverage its alliances, deter multiple adversaries simultaneously, and recognize how energy, trade routes, and technological networks bind Europe, the Middle East, and East Asia together—making a regional focus insufficient for long-term security.
Fixing Our Healthcare System
Q: How might AI and broader education reform change the doctor's role in the AI era?
AI should augment rather than replace doctors, with a focus on training physicians to critically evaluate AI outputs and to work with AI tools, plus ensuring a broad skill set that includes the ability to escalate to specialists when needed.
Fixing Our Healthcare System
Q: Josh, what are the main barriers preventing more doctors from entering the system today?
Entry barriers are substantial due to restricted funding for residencies, accreditation gatekeeping, and the infamous bottleneck in residency slots, which curtails the growth of the physician workforce even as demand climbs.
Encouraging Competing Viewpoints Among College Students
Q: You've talked about keeping political ideology out of the classroom. Why is that problematic? Why does that create distrust? And how can the administration remove politics from the classroom, research and tenure decisions if the faculty isn't on board?
The guest argues that a failure to present multiple perspectives undermines scholarly standards and erodes trust; he emphasizes the need for explicit inclusion of relevant, diverse viewpoints in syllabi, and for a culture that upholds academic freedom while avoiding political orthodoxy.
How AI Will Change Law Schools, Law Firms, and Users of Legal Services
Q: Is there a thought process about reducing law school enrollments or closing schools due to AI disruption?
The discussion suggests that there will be some consolidation and a shift toward training lawyers at higher levels of capability rather than increasing general intake; disruption will favor those who can supervise AI and manage complex tasks, potentially reducing the need for large student cohorts in traditional programs.
