  • Love this show

I really enjoy listening to this show while walking, it is inspiring, interesting, and so well done. Re episode 329, I feel like some of us have 4 rings, as caregivers of a totally disabled medically complex person. That ring can throw a constant stream of curve balls. After years of it, walking against the traffic feels VERY hard sometimes… but SO worth it. Thank you for such a great show!

  • Walking IS a privilege!

Have listened to many of your podcasts while out walking. All are, without question, 5 Star. But, I really appreciated Episode 298 with Ande Lyons. At 68, I walk faithfully every day as much for the joy of moving my body as for the potential health benefits down the road. Ande is absolutely right; walking IS a privilege, not a chore. And, it’s not about adding years to life, but adding life to years! Could not have framed it better myself. Thanks for all you.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

343. Why Can't I Stick With Any New Health Habits? Build the Mini-System That Makes Change Last
Q: Why can't I stick with anything, even when I know it's good for me?
The host reframes the struggle from a personal defect to a no-do gap—the small, daily frictions and decisions that prevent action—explaining that everyone already sticks with many routines (like brushing teeth) and that five forces (friction, daily re-decisions, self-perception, flat stretch, and distant payoff) undermine new habits. By recognizing these forces, listeners can build a tiny, seven-move system that automates choices, reduces start-up friction, plans for slips, and creates present rewards, making consistency more attainable.
341. Nighttime Snacking + Midlife Weight: What Our Bodies Do Overnight if We Let Them, with Dr. William Li
Q: Do you mind talking to us a little bit about that?
Dr. Li explains that his follow-up work aimed to understand metabolism as a stable, four-phase system, and that lifestyle factors in midlife—stress, sleep, and eating patterns—play a crucial role in whether fat is stored or burned. He emphasizes practical steps like extending nightly fasting and prioritizing quality sleep to support fat burning.
339. How to Curb Sugar Cravings: All Things Blood Sugar, Body Composition, and Eating by the Plate
Q: What role does body composition play in monitoring progress beyond the scale?
Body composition measurements like DEXA scans reveal visceral fat changes and lean mass gains, which often accompany fat loss and improved insulin sensitivity, providing a clearer picture of metabolic health than weight alone.
339. How to Curb Sugar Cravings: All Things Blood Sugar, Body Composition, and Eating by the Plate
Q: How do swaps look in a typical day to gradually reduce sugar impact?
Swaps involve moving from a white bun to a gluten-free or lettuce-wrap option, choosing lentil or vegetable-based pastas, substituting coconut or rice tortillas, and gradually replacing high-sugar dressings and marinara with olive oil, lemon, and vinegar-based alternatives while keeping portions steady.
330. Walking is Your Prescription for Health + Longevity: How to Get the Most Mileage from Your Walks with Dr. Courtney Conley, author of WALK
Q: Can you share a success story that illustrates the impact of simple walking interventions?
A wildlife firefighter trainee with a heel injury used a staged program starting with five-minute walks, gradually increasing to multiple daily sessions; within weeks his pain and function improved, and he could resume outdoor activities like climbing, illustrating how movement reshapes outcomes.
