Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Interview with Dr. Molly Carney
Q: Are you a native Oregonian, and if not, where are you from?
I am not a native Oregonian. I grew up in upstate New York, in a place with a strong archaeology presence and a university program that later drew me into the field.
Exploring Oregon's History: Lewis & Clark (w/Alicia Hamill)
Q: Were there any misconceptions about Sacagawea or other figures you aimed to correct?
There have been debates about Sacagawea's precise tribal affiliation and pronunciation, and we emphasized exploring multiple sources and oral histories to present a more nuanced picture rather than a single definitive answer.
Exploring Oregon's History: Lewis & Clark (w/Alicia Hamill)
Q: What role did Indigenous tribes and Sacagawea play in your storytelling and in the Bicentennial narrative?
Tribes were invited to tell parts of their own story during the Bicentennial, which broadened the public understanding beyond the traditional expedition-centric view and highlighted the broader history of the peoples encountered along the trail.
Exploring Oregon's History: Lewis & Clark (w/Alicia Hamill)
Q: What were some of the key components of your school presentations and how did you tailor them to different audiences?
We built hands-on materials and boxes that allowed students to engage multiple learning styles—touch, doing, hearing, seeing, and participating—so the audience could connect with the story in a tangible way across diverse settings.
Exploring Oregon's History: Lewis & Clark (w/Alicia Hamill)
Q: Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you got involved with the Lewis and Clark project?
I joined as part of the Oregon National Guard for the Bicentennial, taking on roles to promote Lewis and Clark along the trail, and I found it incredibly engaging to tell the Army's story and show how the expedition intersected with military and public history.
