Inflation just hit a three-year high, and the consensus has decided the era of cheap is over for good. Neil Woodford thinks that's exactly wrong — and that the inflation in the headlines is mostly one war showing up in the oil price.

This week the press is unanimous: Britain is uniquely badly positioned, the IMF says so, and the 30-year gilt yield at 5.8% is proof. The Times, the Telegraph and the FT have all run the same story.

Great episode today, learnt a lot as always. Just to add another significant reason why consumers have such high savings rates compared to historical norms is the lack of housing market activity. No house moving means less DIY ahead of a sale and no new kitchen / garden / sofa / DIY / you name it after moving into your new home to get it just how you want it.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Why Britain Can't Build a Trillion Dollar Giant
Q: Neil, let's start with the obvious objection first. America is a far bigger economy than we are. Isn't that the whole story? They've simply got more room to build giants.
Partially true, but scale alone isn't the whole story. Cases like TSMC and Samsung show that even smaller or different economies can produce trillion-dollar leaders with the right mix of technology, governance, and capital access.
Forget China. Europe Is The Imbalance That Could Drag Britain Down.
Q: If Europe remains on its current path, what happens to global imbalances?
Global imbalances are likely to persist or worsen, potentially triggering slower global growth and continued demand for US borrowing while Europe remains structurally underperforming.
Forget China. Europe Is The Imbalance That Could Drag Britain Down.
Q: Can Europe realistically reform to address its underperformance, and what would that entail?
Europe would need to implement Draghi's recommendations, increase dynamic investment, deregulate where needed, and boost labor market flexibility and energy competitiveness to unlock growth.
Forget China. Europe Is The Imbalance That Could Drag Britain Down.
Q: What does the data tell you about the UK's potential rejoining of the EU and its economic impact?
The data show no clear evidence that leaving harmed the UK economically; growth has been broadly in line with Europe since the pandemic, and any future gains would require stronger macro policies rather than rejoining for political reasons.
The Stagflation Panic Is Wrong — Here's What's Really Happening
Q: What four forces does Neil see as driving prices down, and are they being reversed by the current war?
Neil identifies four structural deflationary forces: goods deflation from China's surplus capacity, AI-driven cost reductions in services, renewable energy and LNG developments plus a long-term oversupply in energy, and a weak labor market with declining wage growth. He argues the current war did not reverse these forces and may only be a temporary disruption.
