  • the sound quality is hard to listen to

unfortunately i find the program hard to listen to. could it have been post-edited so heavily to avoid ai-cloning the voices? there‘s gotta be another way. at times it‘s hard to even understand one sentence if the consonants are frequently as distorted as they are.

  • Party political broadcast for Reform

Blimey Merryn, I am really surprised that you gave Richard Tice such an easy ride. This is a man with no political experience, a climate change denier, talking off the top of his head on subjects he knows little about and you let him espouse these views completely unchallenged. If you think Tice and his cronies are the answer to this country’s economic challenges we really are in trouble. I expect more from you and Bloomberg.

  • Hoped for better but then listened to the Richard Tice interview

I had expected better interviewing and more searching questions of Richard Tice not fake fawning over a few limited economic policy points that all played in Reform’s narrative.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Gold, Debt and the AI Boom: A Financial Historian’s Warning
Q: What should an individual investor consider for portfolio allocation in light of energy and debt concerns?
He advocates treating gold as an anchor in a diversified portfolio (potentially 10-25%), reducing reliance on traditional sovereign bonds, and balancing with non-equity assets, while remaining wary of sovereign debt trajectories across advanced economies.
Gold, Debt and the AI Boom: A Financial Historian’s Warning
Q: Is there a credible path to a severe downturn or deflationary depression due to AI-driven shifts?
While some analyses suggest a deflationary pull if AI collapses white-collar demand, the guest argues that extensions of debt and energy constraints could instead push inflation or create volatile cycles; the outcome depends on technology adoption, energy costs, and how debt dynamics unfold.
Gold, Debt and the AI Boom: A Financial Historian’s Warning
Q: What explains the current volatility around AI stocks and the hype around their potential?
Hype rides on the belief that AI will revolutionize productivity, but the guest emphasizes that the underlying models are probabilistic and prone to errors; the debate centers on whether the promised efficiency gains will materialize and how funding mechanisms (like vendor financing) have inflated valuations.
UK Smart Savings Dilemma: SIPP, ISA or LISA?
Q: What should a young saver prioritize between contributing to a SIPP or an ISA with an aim towards retirement?
The guests lean toward prioritizing ISA contributions in many cases unless the saver expects to benefit more from pension relief via salary sacrifice, especially if they are concerned about political risk and access flexibility; however, if salary sacrifice limits and higher earners are at play, increasing pension contributions can be advantageous before filling an ISA.
Why Contrarians Can't Get Enough of Real Assets
Q: Sure. Maslow came up with this thing called the pyramid of need for a human. Can you explain your pyramid of needs idea and how it is central to your current investing process?
The pyramid is a framework where foundational needs for a country—national security, energy security, and food security—must be secure before you can sustainably pursue growth opportunities higher up the pyramid, such as industrial security and financial stability. In investing, this translates into favoring assets and regions that strengthen foundational resilience, like energy infrastructure, critical commodities, and sovereign strength, before investing in more speculative or growth-oriented bets.
