Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Dr. David Ruslander | Lifelong Learning in Veterinary Oncology
Q: How has the role of radiation therapy changed over your career, and what technological advances have most impacted your practice?
He notes that radiation therapy used to be coarse and destructive, likening it to 'watch repair with a sledgehammer,' but now benefits from precise planning via CT/MRI fusion, adaptive planning, and newer delivery methods that spare normal tissue while expanding indications to tumors like adrenal, thyroid, and lung cancers.
Dr. David Ruslander | Lifelong Learning in Veterinary Oncology
Q: What initially drew you to veterinary oncology and how did your path unfold across academia, private practice, and industry?
He describes starting in equine and small animal medicine, recognizing oncology as a neglected field, and pursuing opportunities that allowed him to balance clinical work with teaching and research, eventually engaging in international programs and leadership roles such as leading European initiatives and later serving as president of the Veterinary Cancer Society.
Dr. Guannan Wang | Precision Oncology Through Genomics
Q: What advice would you give oncologists considering adding genomic testing to their practices?
Despite the lack of large-scale data, oncologists shouldn't wait for perfect studies to begin utilizing genomic testing, as existing small cohort studies show positive outcomes with genomic-guided treatments.
Dr. Guannan Wang | Precision Oncology Through Genomics
Q: What do you see is the main focus area for genomic testing at VetOmics?
Currently, the primary role of genomic testing is to guide therapy choices and treatment selections across available targeted therapies, as well as increasing utility in challenging diagnoses.
Dr. Guannan Wang | Precision Oncology Through Genomics
Q: What got you into cancer genomics precision, and how did you end up in the veterinary space?
My background in molecular and cellular biology drew me to research with a direct clinical impact, and working with my mentor at the University of Pennsylvania highlighted the gap in veterinary cancer care that I wanted to help fill.
