  • Knowledge is Power

A wonderful place to learn about a still mysterious diagnosis “dystopia”. Julie is a skilled interviewer and is able to bring out the emotional as well as the physical aspects of this “challenge”. I highly recommend following this series. The information is powerful for people with dystopia, their families and their medical team.

Casandra Oldham on moving forward
Q: What happened when you were diagnosed and what did you try first on the path to managing your dystonia?
She details the Mayo Clinic diagnosis process, initial trial medications (Levodopa, Artane), and first steps like HBOT and consulting multiple specialists to explore hormones, gut health, and other neuromodulatory approaches, all while continuing to run.
Casandra Oldham on moving forward
Q: Tell us a little bit about who you are outside of running.
Casandra describes how her life before running was active and involved in fitness, her serious accident in her 20s, and how those experiences shaped her path, leading to advocacy work and involvement in a medical/community foundation.
Dystonia and Neuroplastic Recovery with Dr. Dave Clarke
Q: How does Pain Reprocessing Therapy fit with runners dealing with dystonia?
PRT and emotional awareness strategies share the core idea that the brain is generating and modulating symptoms; they reduce fear and reframe symptoms as solvable brain processes, leading to improved function beyond traditional symptom management.
Dystonia and Neuroplastic Recovery with Dr. Dave Clarke
Q: How did you come to focus on brain-to-body conditions after a traditional medical training?
A patient with severe GI symptoms who tested normal prompted a shift; a trusted psychiatrist's approach and observing dramatic recoveries convinced him to apply brain-centered frameworks across cases, leading to the development of neuroplastic symptom treatment.
Where we are with Dystonia Research with Neurologist Erik van Wensen
Q: What treatments have been explored for sports-related dystonias?
Treatments include botulinum toxin injections targeted to specific muscles, beta blockers in some cases, and exploratory approaches like cognitive behavioral therapy, hypnosis, and EMDR; emerging options discussed are deep brain stimulation and focused ultrasound, though evidence and practicality vary by sport.
