  • Joyful Joyce!

What a gift my wife, Ann, and I have been given by Cliona O’Farrelly and Mark Sanford Gross! We’ve been huge Joyce fans for decades and started celebrating Bloomsday in our village 14 years ago with a walk that has become the James Joyce Jaunt, an excerpted dramatization of about 15 scenes from the novel. While we thought we had a good understanding of the book, we were floored by what we’re learning each day of the 80-day journey. And these podcasts are icing on the cake. Brava Cliona and Bravo... more

  • Fun and Entertaining

When I tried reading Ulysses in the past, it was a stumbling journey of starts and stops and then abandonment. Recently, partly because of this wonderful podcast hosted and presented by Mark Sanford Gross, I have picked up a fresh copy of Ulysses and have been enjoying the path through the amazing language. This podcast has erudite Joyce scholars as guest speakers, as well as thoughts and words from ordinary folk who have been reading 10 pages a day and then taking part in the weekly worldwide Z... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ulysses In 80, Webinar Series #2-Featuring Sam Slote. 06.11.25
Q: How do annotations handle historical language like the word grand?
Sam explains that meanings shift over time and that annotations must balance historical context with readable clarity, acknowledging that some terms carry multiple valences and cannot be fixed to a single modern meaning.
Ulysses In 80, Webinar Series #2-Featuring Sam Slote. 06.11.25
Q: Do you think the Homeric correspondences were a straight jacket for Joyce or liberating for readers?
Sam suggests that while the Homeric schema was intended to guide, it often functions more as a descriptive framework and a source of interpretive flexibility for readers, serving as a helpful map rather than a rigid constraint.
Ulysses In 80 Webinar #9. The Intersection of Dante and Joyce Featuring Dr. Daragh O'Connell 8.06.2025
Q: Dante never read Homer; how does that shape the lineage Joyce inherits from Dante?
Dante acknowledges Homer as a benchmark among poets but never engages him directly in the same way as Virgil; Joyce inherits a framework of classical influence mediated through Dante and Virgil, using them as guides to structure his own journey in Ulysses.
Ulysses in 80 Webinar Series Episode #10: From Trieste,Featuring Ilaria Susmel 08.13.2025
Q: Hilaria, can I ask you a question? Is that Triestian focus or references lost to the average Ulysses reader?
Some references may be lost to casual readers, but there is a core set of Trieste-focused allusions that enrich understanding of Bloom and the Joycean world; a key resource is John McCourt's Years of Bloom which helps illuminate these connections.
Ulysses In 80. Webinar Series #3.-Featuring James Maynard.06.25.2025
Q: How do the archival materials illuminate or change our understanding of specific works like Finnegans Wake and Ulysses?
The archives personalize Joyce, revealing him as a family man and craftsperson, and show how his notebooks and manuscripts illuminate the intricate drafting behind works like Ulysses and Finnegans Wake, offering new access points for readers and researchers.
