  • I’d give it a low 20s…

…for general chit-chatty humour, but points are lost for some exhaustingly irritating guests and a very ‘friend of the pod who also has a pod’ approach to guest selection. However, I’ve listened to many eps (well, only the ones where I’ve actually seen the movie…which is surprising few) so shouldn’t be too harsh….this isn’t the podcast ‘NPR Politics’ so it doesn’t automatically lose 50% of it’s points but it also doesn’t rank among my top podcasts either (gay or otherwise).

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

REBECCA with Ryan O'Connor!
Q: Would you recommend Rebecca to a gay person?
Both hosts enthusiastically affirm a strong recommendation, noting the film's significance and enduring influence, with a nod to its impactful queer-coded elements.
REBECCA with Ryan O'Connor!
Q: Does Rebecca offer a positive portrayal of homosexuality?
They largely conclude it is not presented positively, citing subtext and the villainous manipulation led by Mrs. Danvers rather than affirming queer representation.
REBECCA with Ryan O'Connor!
Q: What makes Rebecca stand out historically among Hitchcock's films?
The guests highlight its female-centric perspective, the shadowy heroine dynamic, and the film's lush, Gothic mood driven by Mrs. Danvers, which sets Rebecca apart from Hitchcock's more male-gaze-centric thrillers.
CABARET with Jon Reilly!
Q: So guess, Jon, we asked you to pick a movie and you chose Cabaret. Why Cabaret?
Jon explains initial confusion about a crossover format, then emphasizes Cabaret's unique status as a film with a strong musical identity, its historical setting in the Weimar Republic, and the iconic status of its performers, which makes it a compelling candidate for their scoring system.
WILLY WONKA & THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY with Allen Loeb!
Q: Allen, what would you give Willy Wonka on a scale of 0 to 100 in actual gay characters? Is there anyone who's actually gay in this?
Most observers find the film lacking explicit gay characters; the score reflects a perception of queerness more via subtext and production, not direct representation.
