  • Too much chatter and not enough content

Gerry and Jim are both very knowledgeable and they do give good info, however that is only about 20% of the show.

I find myself fast forwarding through so much of the show to find the actual content.

  • Swim better from a podcast?? Absolutely.

Episodes 4, 5, and 6 ought to be required listening for every triathlete. Real, specific advice on what's really important in the swim. Delivered with a clear (and fun and funny) style that makes it easy to visualize the techniques. They burst some myth bubbles, too, and help focus us all on what truly matters to be a better swimmer.

Best open water swimming podcast there is. Lots of very useful info here! As long as you are able to ignore Jim’s smuggy comments and loud voice, you will love this podcast!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode # 143: What Should Elite Athletes and Amateurs BOTH Focus ON?
Q: Why should swimmers use swimming-specific heart-rate targets instead of running/biking percentages?
Heart rates are sport-specific; swimming is performed horizontally with different load and thermoregulation, so you should establish a max swimming heart rate and base percentages on that value.
Episode #141: What's Possible
Q: Why would someone get a calf cramp while they're out there racing?
Calf cramps in swimming can be caused by resistance against the foot while kicking, leading to overstretching of ligaments, especially if the swimmer hasn't been practicing or building a solid foundation.
Episode #135: Race Tactics Revealed
Q: Why do we hit race takeout and not just jump in and have a nice steady pace?
The physiological adaptation needs and the adrenaline at races cause athletes to naturally swim harder than they plan to.
Episode #132: BIG Open Water Mistakes
Q: Should I try heading, speeding up by going 59, 60?
You should move the tempo trainer up by about 5% every three weeks, staying at each new speed for a minimum of 10 workouts.
Episode #122: Tautness Talk with LIVE Q and A
Q: What do you feel a beneficial training load is over the different distances for super competitive age group athletes?
It depends on the individual athlete's schedule, consistency, and training prescription.
