Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ep 133 - The Mastermind behind the record equalling 5th win of the TT Racers at the Wicklow Way Relay - Terry McConnon
Q: How should coaches think about durability when designing a training plan for trail runners?
Durability should be treated as a fatigue-management system; training should be structured to keep the athlete able to perform at a consistent level week after week, rather than chasing sporadic peak sessions.
Ep 133 - The Mastermind behind the record equalling 5th win of the TT Racers at the Wicklow Way Relay - Terry McConnon
Q: How do split sessions improve performance, and what does the research suggest about their effect on recovery?
Split sessions, where shorter reps are done later in the day after longer morning repeats, can lower heart rate and lactate in the second session and improve next-day recovery, enabling similar total workloads with reduced cost.
Ep 133 - The Mastermind behind the record equalling 5th win of the TT Racers at the Wicklow Way Relay - Terry McConnon
Q: What sits at the center of the Norwegian method, and why is it important for weekly planning?
The center is the Golden Zone training (2.3 to 3 millimoles of lactate, about 80-87% of max heart rate), and the weekly plan is built to protect and maximize that zone, ensuring sustainable progress rather than chasing flashy sessions.
Ep 132 - Wicklow Way Relay 2026 Hounds and Hares Race Preview
Q: What could go wrong on race day with the new two-race format?
Rene explains that models are based on assumptions and that occupancy, finish-time estimates, and parking can deviate, potentially causing issues, but the plan is to learn and adapt if needed.
Ep 131 - Maurice Mullins 50k Winner and on his way to the Euros - Luke Weldon
Q: What does the next two months look like ahead of the Euros for Luke?
Luke plans a final tune-up at Trail de Gerdelin as a key session before the Euros, followed by a focused recovery window and a couple of targeted sessions to arrive fit and fresh for Slovenia, with attention to avoiding niggles and preserving peak form.
