  • Useful but too many ads

I do find this interesting and helpful and well structured. However, it’s now usually over 5 mins at the start for ads (which I skip over anyway), then normally a minute or two in the middle and some ad the end. I get that this how most podcasts make more money to keep going but it’s a bit too much for me on this one. Also, hardly any episode goes by without Jason reminiscing about his college track career…

  • When You Should Quit Running

Overall Jason’s podcast is SUPER. If I had to pick one running podcast - and just one - this would be it. Great insights, particularly relevant for any runner who is injury prone and/or moving into or past their mid 40s. The last episode is a “must listen” for any runner wondering what an eventual wind down from habitual running might entail.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Good vs. Great: Ranking VO2 Max, Threshold, & Economy with Brady Holmer
Q: How can a runner figure out their strengths and weaknesses across these metrics?
Brady suggests comparing PRs across distances, using intuitive sense, and periodically testing or estimating VO2 max through wearables, while emphasizing that the three pillars interact and should be trained together with periodization to avoid neglecting any one area.
Body Positions, Cues, and Cadence: The Ultimate Running Form Episode with Paul Mackinnon (repost)
Q: How should cadence be treated in form work?
Cadence is not a magic number; it's an output that depends on leg length and mechanics. Adjusting cadence without addressing underlying mechanics can harm long-term health; use it as a tool when appropriate but not as a fixed target.
Body Positions, Cues, and Cadence: The Ultimate Running Form Episode with Paul Mackinnon (repost)
Q: Do you have near-universal cues that most runners would benefit from?
Yes, focus on getting the arm swing in the right position for the individual, finding a comfortable line for the arms that doesn't cause shoulder tension, and then aligning that with a triangle of torso and hips to promote lift and efficient movement.
Body Positions, Cues, and Cadence: The Ultimate Running Form Episode with Paul Mackinnon (repost)
Q: In your mind, how do you define a form cue or running cue?
A cue is a specific movement or position for the athlete to hold that will improve or create change, and it can be a static position or a movement, with emphasis on internal feel and contrasting old vs new patterns.
Fueling Do's & Don'ts (Carbs, Protein, & Supplements) with Stevie Lyn Smith, RD
Q: What are the recommended gram-per-kilogram protein targets for endurance athletes?
Typical guidance sits around 1.2-1.8 g/kg/day, with up to 2 g/kg during injury healing; many athletes may hover around 1.4-1.8 g/kg depending on goals and training, balancing with adequate carbohydrate intake.
