  • New fan!

My son who attends CSU and I recently made the 14 hour drive home for the summer. We listened to this podcast straight through. After serving 4 years in the USMC, he has recently embraced running as a sport. We really enjoy the variation in topics discussed, even the “running while pregnant” one! I told him I ran right up until the week before I delivered him and he came out a lean machine of a baby! As an Exercise Science major who is now a physical therapist, I was lucky enough to have read th... more

  • Useful but too many ads

I do find this interesting and helpful and well structured. However, it’s now usually over 5 mins at the start for ads (which I skip over anyway), then normally a minute or two in the middle and some ad the end. I get that this how most podcasts make more money to keep going but it’s a bit too much for me on this one. Also, hardly any episode goes by without Jason reminiscing about his college track career…

  • When You Should Quit Running

Overall Jason’s podcast is SUPER. If I had to pick one running podcast - and just one - this would be it. Great insights, particularly relevant for any runner who is injury prone and/or moving into or past their mid 40s. The last episode is a “must listen” for any runner wondering what an eventual wind down from habitual running might entail.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

2:11 Marathoner Charlie Sweeney on Mega Mileage: How He Runs 145 Mile Weeks
Q: What does a typical 140-mile week look like, and how do you structure it Monday through Sunday?
A 140-mile week is built around a four-to-five day doubling pattern, with one midweek long run, a track or VO2-focused day, and a preferred long run on the weekend. The structure prioritizes key workouts while keeping easy days and bridge runs to maintain momentum and recovery.
2:11 Marathoner Charlie Sweeney on Mega Mileage: How He Runs 145 Mile Weeks
Q: How would the average person gradually increase their mileage without turning it into an all-consuming endeavor?
Start with small, sustainable increases such as adding one or two easy doubles weekly and modestly lengthening a long run, then periodize to allow recovery. Emphasize listening to the body and gradually adapting, with occasional intentional drops to consolidate gains before building again.
Plyometrics: How to Start the Easy Way, with 5x National Champ Eoin Everard
Q: How should a runner begin incorporating plyometrics into their training safely?
Start with movement base and strength work (pilates, balance, single-leg exercises), then add power work, and only finally introduce plyometrics like jump rope and light drills, keeping sessions low in volume and progressively increasing complexity.
Good vs. Great: Ranking VO2 Max, Threshold, & Economy with Brady Holmer
Q: How can a runner figure out their strengths and weaknesses across these metrics?
Brady suggests comparing PRs across distances, using intuitive sense, and periodically testing or estimating VO2 max through wearables, while emphasizing that the three pillars interact and should be trained together with periodization to avoid neglecting any one area.
Body Positions, Cues, and Cadence: The Ultimate Running Form Episode with Paul Mackinnon (repost)
Q: How should cadence be treated in form work?
Cadence is not a magic number; it's an output that depends on leg length and mechanics. Adjusting cadence without addressing underlying mechanics can harm long-term health; use it as a tool when appropriate but not as a fixed target.
