Expert Advice for Running Your First Marathon
Q: What is the most important factor for a first-time marathoner's success according to you?
Identify a strong personal why, assess readiness and base fitness, and ensure training is sustainable to prevent injury and burnout, focusing on long-term consistency.
Ask the Coach Q&A (2026 Edition)
Q: What advice for female runners in mid to late 50s who want to keep marathon goals?
Prioritize nutrition (protein and carbs), ensure adequate recovery, and consider adjusting goals to maximize longevity; strength training is key for maintaining muscle and bone health, and many benefit from coaching to optimize routines.
Ask the Coach Q&A (2026 Edition)
Q: How should older runners modify the Maffetone heart rate formula?
Age-based formulas can under- or overestimate for older runners; it may be better to estimate max heart rate and target a zone around 70% of max for long slow runs, using walk breaks to stay in range when needed.
Ask the Coach Q&A (2026 Edition)
Q: For runners over 50, how many marathons per year can you realistically race hard?
It depends on recovery, nutrition, sleep, and whether you're injury-free; two to four hard races can be realistic for some, but many should space them out and prioritize recovery and modular training blocks.
More Ask the Coach Q&A
Q: What's the best approach to running with bunions and deciding when surgery might be necessary?
Evaluate shoe fit and toe box room, consider flexible upper materials, and if pain persists or worsens, consult a podiatrist; surgery may be a reasonable option to preserve future running depending on bunion severity and impact on function.
