  • Fantastic theology, needs audio editing

These keynote lectures are great for my intellectual formation as I commute to and from work. As great as these talks are, the audio is often of very poor quality. Compared with other podcasts, this one falls short in this regard, probably because these are not traditional podcasts but public lectures. I would recommend each session be slightly edited to improve the audibility of soft-spoken academics. I would also recommend editing out q&a or having an audio editor to restate the question for t... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Is it reasonable to believe we have immortal souls? | Fr. James Dominic Rooney, O.P.
Q: Distinction between Thomistic dualism and Cartesian dualism, and why rational capacities vs consciousness capacities matter for immortality claims?
He argues that his Hylo-morphic view does not fit Descartes' two-substance dualism and contends rational capacities, rather than consciousness alone, underpin immortality claims; he also notes ongoing debate and differences in evidence about qualia.
Is it reasonable to believe we have immortal souls? | Fr. James Dominic Rooney, O.P.
Q: In this account, how could we explain the way in which neural or chemical disorders affect our intellectual abilities?
He describes a traditional view where sense data inputs from the brain influence thinking, and acknowledges disorders can alter inputs or higher-order processing, yet maintains higher-order cognition can adapt or operate on reasons.
Is it reasonable to believe we have immortal souls? | Fr. James Dominic Rooney, O.P.
Q: The first one is, in regards to the survivalist and corruptionist debate, does the intellect have an act of existence?
The speaker explains that the debate is about whether immortality preserves the whole person or only a reduced form, and he notes he doesn't take a side but suggests a third option and emphasizes the discussion may not affect his main argument.
This Is My Body: Does Contemporary Science Refute the Doctrine of Transubstantiation? | Thomas Davenport, O.P.
Q: Does the Church's use of Aristotelian concepts constrain modern science, or can these ideas enrich scientific inquiry without forcing a dogmatic framework?
The Church's history shows a dialogue where philosophical concepts can inform theological claims while remaining compatible with scientific progress; Aristotelian ideas may broaden the range of questions scientists consider without dictating methodological orthodoxy.
This Is My Body: Does Contemporary Science Refute the Doctrine of Transubstantiation? | Thomas Davenport, O.P.
Q: Could Aristotelian concepts like species and substance still be relevant to modern science, and could their engagement guide scientific theories?
There is a meaningful way to integrate Aristotelian Thomistic thought with science; philosophy can shape the questions we ask and help interpret scientific findings, even if science does not rely on Aristotelian terms in practice.
