  • Excellent podcast!

Just what you'd expect from Smithsonian Magazine: interesting topics, presented with accuracy, intelligence, and just enough depth, without getting too much into the weeds. Love it!

  • Not the Whole Story

The episode about “Manhunt “ should have pointed out that critics universally panned the Apple series. The casting was awful and the acting even worse. It also played loosely with the facts.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Remarkable, Amazing Stories of Route 66 Reflect the Twists and Turns of 100 Years of Americana
Q: Why did Route 66 attract so many promoters and audiences early on?
The road offered a new kind of mobility, tied to modernity and commerce; promoters used ads, billboards, and public events like races to spur awareness and traffic, while the Depression-era economy provided work and purpose in road-building.
The Remarkable, Amazing Stories of Route 66 Reflect the Twists and Turns of 100 Years of Americana
Q: Tell me about Cyrus Avery and his ambitions for highways.
Avery was a Midwest businessman who pushed for a connected national highway network, arguing for a diagonal route from Chicago to California, and he and colleagues lobbied for federal funding to make Route 66 a reality.
The Real Story Behind Abigail Adams' 'Remember the Ladies' Letter
Q: Did the letter influence policy or provoke a public shift at the time?
No substantial public impact was recorded at the time; the letter remained private, and its radical potential was not realized in policy during the revolutionary period.
The Real Story Behind Abigail Adams' 'Remember the Ladies' Letter
Q: What is the popular interpretation of the passage and how does it differ from historians' reading?
The famous line 'remember the ladies' is often read as a call for women's suffrage, but historians show it was about legal protections and moral advocacy within marriage, not immediately about voting rights.
How to Fit 250 Years of American History and Culture Into One Map
Q: So how are communities across the country marking the 250th?
All states are doing their own thing, with bigger museums and historical societies putting original documents and artifacts on display.
