  • First world problems

Sometimes it seems a bit like these are first world problems when there are much deeper problems in this world than having the privilege to graduate from university but still not feeling good enough.

Have just listened to the latest episode with Mark Williamson. He spoke with such clarity and vision and as always, after Therapy Works interviews, I felt inspired and proactive! Have downloaded the Action for Happiness App and look forward to their daily ‘happiness’ tips. Thank you, Julia, for yet another wonderfully insightful conversation. Therapy Works is utterly brilliant!

  • White privilege

Please, no more posh white guests! This does nothing to dispel the myth that psychotherapy is only accessible to wealthy middle class white people!

  • Excessive ads and amateur approach

The amount of ads is unbelievably excessive and interrupting. Makes me think of ‘by all cost financial’ motivation behind podcasts as such. The content itself appears to be quite shallow, especially compounded by deflated host’s personality who is seemingly disengaged from their audience.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Agony Aunties: Why Do I Feel So Lonely?
Q: What might be getting in the way of deeper connection for you?
Beliefs that sharing deeper parts of yourself burdens others, fear of rejection, and a model of relationships formed in upbringing can all block vulnerability; exploring these in therapy and trialing small, safe disclosures can help.
Agony Aunties: How to Survive the Summer Holidays
Q: Hello, Agony Aunties, Sophie and Emily. So, our question this week is, the summer holidays are coming and I already feel stressed. We both work, can't afford camps every week, and have two teenagers who seem to spend their lives saying, there's nothing to do. What can I do?
Validate the stress, acknowledge the budget constraints, and invite the family to brainstorm affordable options together. Encourage teens to participate in planning, set honest financial boundaries, and create a shared summer project or rotation of activities that suits everyone's interests.
Michael Morpurgo on Secrets, Loss, and the Stories That Save Us
Q: What is a particular challenge you are facing or have faced?
A major challenge is coping with aging and the losses that come with it, including the death of friends and family, which deepens the sense of memory as a sustaining force.
Joanna King on Caring for a Parent with Alzheimer’s
Q: Do you want to introduce yourself? Let us know a little bit about you.
Joanna King describes herself as a psychologist and a mother of two boys, sharing her current caregiving situation and professional background.
Agony Aunties: Feeling Overwhelmed by the World?
Q: The question is, I feel permanently overwhelmed by the state of the world. Climate change, war, politics, this government's politics, the cost of living. I wake up anxious and carry a low level dredge most days. Part of me thinks I should stay informed and engaged, but another part feels emotionally exhausted by it all. How do I stay compassionate and aware without becoming consumed by fear and hopelessness?
The hosts discuss reducing overload by curating inputs, balancing information with meaningful actions, fostering connection, and cultivating agency in small, daily acts. They emphasize present-mocus strategies like focusing on what can be controlled, seeking community, and drawing on hopeful frameworks from activism literature to sustain resilience.
