Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Nerina Pallot on 25 Years of Music and Why Hope Still Matters (#285)
Q: You've spoken about the balance between artistry and the business side of things, especially with major labels. How did that shape your approach to making music on your own terms?
I followed my gut, sometimes turning down opportunities with big names because I needed to stay true to my instincts and to the music I believed in, even if it meant more hardship.
Scouting For Girls' Roy Stride on 'These Are The Good Days', wildfires and perspective (#277)
Q: Roy, you wrote the album across LA, Ireland, the UK, even airports. Did that in-between nowhere and everywhere, feeling seep into the songs?
Yes, the different places fed different textures and moods, but the core message stayed cohesive; the songs were written in diverse spaces yet were brought together in the studio to form a unified statement.
Robert Levon Been of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club on Re-Examining Howl (#271)
Q: If someone who had never heard the music of Black Rebel before, what five songs should they start with?
Robert suggests a few key tracks including "Red Eyes and Tears" and "Spread Your Love" as essential starting points to understand their music.
Robert Levon Been of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club on Re-Examining Howl (#271)
Q: How did those shows feel emotionally compared to playing those songs 20 years ago?
Robert noted that this time they felt more skilled at performing the songs from Howl, finally learning how to play them well after years.
Robert Levon Been of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club on Re-Examining Howl (#271)
Q: Was there a particular night or moment on the tour, you know, a particular highlight that sticks with you from last year?
Robert shares that just surviving the tour without falling sick stood out, particularly because many band members fell ill during it.
