  • For Listener Experience — Editing Matters!

The April 24, 2025 episode was recommended to me, but I simply couldn’t get through it with all of the distractions and detractors: noise and repeated sirens in the background for extended periods, speaker cross-talk, hard-to-follow topic through-line, etc. Please consider that there is more to podcast quality than good microphones and snazzy soundbites. Guess I’ll just read the transcript…

Cultural intelligence matters more than ever
Q: Rachel, what is your definition of cultural intelligence, and what does the industry often get wrong about it?
Cultural intelligence is identifying what is happening in culture beyond fleeting trends and applying that to business strategy, focusing on higher-order cultural implications rather than a single trend, to guide brands and organizations.
The Effective CMO: The New York Times' Amy Weisenbach
Q: How does the brand platform It's Your World to Understand serve both consumer and B2B audiences?
The platform anchors marketing in the core journalism while enabling a broader brand expression that resonates with readers and advertisers alike, supporting both subscriptions growth and ad strategies by highlighting the reach and trust of The Times.
The Effective CMO: The New York Times' Amy Weisenbach
Q: How has The Times evolved into an ecosystem with multiple revenue streams, and what lessons have you learned from bundling?
Bundling works when positioned as comprehensive access rather than a collection of unrelated products; testing and listening to customers revealed that clarity and perceived value drive willingness to pay, with the bundle enabling deeper engagement across the portfolio.
The Effective CMO: The New York Times' Amy Weisenbach
Q: What does the phrase marketing effectiveness mean to you in the context of your brand?
Effectiveness is the driver of growth across the company; they measure what they can precisely, take calculated risks in areas that are harder to quantify, and aim to grow the business by proving the impact of marketing.
