Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

From Law to Lager to Venture Capital: Rising Tide Ventures Founder Ruchi Desai
Q: What practical advice do you give founders about fundraising and scaling in today's environment?
For fundraising, founders should expect it to be a full-time commitment and prepare a clear plan with milestones, a data room, and a realistic view of exit opportunities. For scaling, focus on targeted expansion, prove velocity in a manageable footprint, and avoid overextending resources in the early stages; then expand from a position of demonstrated strength.
From Law to Lager to Venture Capital: Rising Tide Ventures Founder Ruchi Desai
Q: Why focus on overlooked founders and untapped markets, and how do you define those terms?
Overlooked founders include minorities, women with limited access to capital, older founders, and non-coastal entrepreneurs who often receive less than 2 percent of venture dollars. Untapped markets involve connecting with consumers in ways that aren't fully served today—whether through new ingredients, better accessibility, or relevant emotional connections that open up new communities.
From Law to Lager to Venture Capital: Rising Tide Ventures Founder Ruchi Desai
Q: You've had a fascinating journey from law to co-founding a beer brand to launching a VC fund. How did these pivots shape your current thesis at Rising Tide Ventures?
The through-line was curiosity and a desire to impact people. From derivatives trading to law school to building a consumer brand, I learned to identify patterns, test hypotheses, and move quickly when opportunities appeared. That experience informed a focus on overlooked founders and untapped markets, where capital and networks can accelerate meaningful growth.
Winter FancyFaire* with VentureFuel’s SVP of Innovation and Strategy Alice Ponti
Q: Why did you choose to attend Winter Fancy Food, and what makes it a barometer for food and beverage innovation?
Alice explains that Winter Fancy Food is the flagship event where early-stage signals meet buyer reactions, offering live insights into macrotrends that will later surface mainstream, making it a practical lab for spotting scalable innovations and packaging concepts before they become data-driven norms.
Innovation over Renovation – Mission Ventures Co-Founder John Stapleton
Q: What challenges do you see for entrepreneurs or large companies innovating in the FMCG space today?
The core challenge is aligning true consumer insight with courageous execution; many large companies struggle to move beyond what's worked in the past and to genuinely tailor innovations to a specific, well-understood customer segment rather than trying to appeal to everyone. Maintaining authenticity while achieving scale and premium value is essential.
