  • The truly esoteric things

I’ve been following Gareth for years on the socials, and when he announced a podcast, I smashed “subscribe”. The podcasts have been beyond my expectations. The guests provide so much detail, and it’s all fascinating stuff.

I’m ADHD so I’m all about the minute details, and this ticks all the boxes. Who else would talk about the traditions of cats on ships? From a necessity for vermin control to a tradition, even being awarded medals.

Subscribe, you will not be disappointed.

I’m hooked. Gareth and guests gift us with more colour and depth to historical depths which can help uncover and explain our colloquialisms, the origins of cat litter, and our fascination with beautiful rockets, and more. Dive in folks!!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 10: Battle of Quiberon Bay: France’s Doomed Invasion
Q: How did Hawke's tactics shape the outcome of the battle?
Hawke shifted from a traditional battle line to aggressive pursuit, coordinated with weather and seamanship to close with the French, disrupt their formation, and concentrate firepower on key ships, which, combined with the storm and skilled crews, prevented the French from mounting an effective defense and breaking the blockade.
Episode 10: Battle of Quiberon Bay: France’s Doomed Invasion
Q: Why was invasion of Britain considered necessary in this period?
France believed it could break Britain's economic and naval dominance by landing a substantial invasion force, leveraging its fleet's strength and strategic geography to overcome Britain's maritime blockade and bring about political leverage at a moment when Britain depended on naval power to sustain its global war effort.
Episode 12: The Reichswehr and the Weimar State
Q: What was the nature and durability of the Ebert-Groener pact, and how has history treated it?
The early postwar exchange between Groener and Ebert is better understood as a set of mutual assurances rather than a formal, binding pact; later memoirs and historiography have retroactively framed it as a pact, but contemporaneous events suggest it was more a pragmatic alignment than a guaranteed guarantee of loyalty.
Episode 6: Rat Lines, the Vatican and Nazi escape lines
Q: What sparked the idea that there would be a reckoning for those involved in the Holocaust and war crimes, and how did this shape postwar behavior?
The Allies issued declarations and concrete commitments to prosecute wartime atrocities, with various leaders announcing intentions to bring perpetrators to trial in the countries where crimes occurred. This created a climate in which many feared capture and sought routes to safety, while others leveraged these promises to justify their efforts to flee or to assist others in fleeing.
