  • This podcast used to be decent but lately he has a parade of whack jobs pimping their "alternative medicine" - not evidence based at all.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

718: The Most Harmful Foods for Your Mental Health (Eat This Instead) | Nicole Laurent
Q: What role do micronutrients play in this process?
Micronutrient sufficiency is essential; magnesium is a must, along with a good multivitamin, trace minerals, potassium, calcium where needed, and omega-3s from fish or supplements, because these support enzymatic function and neurotransmitter synthesis critical for mood and cognitive function.
718: The Most Harmful Foods for Your Mental Health (Eat This Instead) | Nicole Laurent
Q: How do you recommend someone begin a ketogenic approach for brain health?
Start with understanding the patient's current carbohydrate intake via tracking, then gradually titrate carbs down in half steps, while replacing the lost energy with healthy fats and ensuring adequate protein to preserve muscle; avoid rapid, unsustainable shifts that people can't maintain.
716: Sleep Doctor: If You Wake Up at 3AM, Do Not Make This Mistake (What Actually Works) | Dr. Michael Breus
Q: What is the dominant approach to helping people fall back asleep when they wake up in the night?
Establish a consistent wake-up time, avoid clock-watching, use calming breathing techniques (such as 4-7-8), and apply a distraction method to lower anxiety and heart rate, followed by optional rest in a relaxed position.
711: The Biggest Lies You’ve Been Told About Diet That Cause Brain Disease (Eat This) | Dr. Georgia Ede
Q: Why is what we're going to talk about today different?
Dr. Ede explains that many mental health symptoms are linked to nutrition and brain metabolism, which are not typically addressed in standard psychiatric visits. By focusing on lowering glucose and insulin, increasing ketone availability, and aligning lifestyle—diet, fasting, exercise—patients can improve brain energy and mood with a more natural, physiology-driven approach.
707: Melatonin Is More Powerful Than You Think — It's Not Just for Sleep | Dr. Deanna Minich
Q: What about light and darkness impact on gut and skin melatonin compared to pineal melatonin?
Skin and gut melatonin can respond to local light signals and environmental cues, but pineal melatonin remains the primary signal for circadian synchronization; the gut has local roles and liquid-phase signaling, whereas skin melatonin is largely local as well.
