I had the privilege of being a guest on this podcast and Jeff is a fantastic host. He asks thoughtful questions, creates space for real conversation, and knows how to balance the science with practical application. The triathlon community is lucky to have someone who tackles both the physical performance side AND the mental/emotional challenges athletes face. What a lazy podcast. I don’t disagree with the premise of the episode, but it was mostly slander without any real science behind it. You dismissed peptide research by claiming there’s “no science,” yet animal studies are science—and you cited nothing showing lack of efficacy. Then you pivoted to say you were fine taking fruit that showed no benefit. The kicker, though, was when you claimed semaglutide can’t be taken orally because it would be broken down in the stomach. Ever heard of Rybelsus? T... more

I can’t remember how I came across this podcast, but Allen neurologist, in fairly high-level triathlete, this has been a brilliant find. Applying the principles of evidence based medicine to triathlon, as well as the associated “industries” that’s around endurance sport, Jeff and his excellent in interns, take regular deep dives to critically appraise the evidence behind the latest big thing - these are not puff pieces, but clearly explained (for the non-expert listener) analyses of the data and... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ep. 198- Triathletes: The Unseen Struggles Behind the Glory + ultra-carb diet
Q: What is ultra-high carb fueling and how does it differ from standard carbohydrate strategies?
Ultra-high carb fueling involves intake of about 90-120 grams per hour by combining glucose and fructose to maximize absorption and delay fatigue, though practicality depends on gut tolerance and intensity; studies show potential benefits for recovery and performance at very long durations, but real-world limits exist due to GI distress.
Ep. 199 -The Pros Closet: Trading Bikes and Telling Tales + the Meniscus
Q: Are meniscal tear surgeries effective?
The episode explains that, for minimally symptomatic meniscal tears, non-operative care often yields significant pain relief and functional improvement in a large majority of patients, while surgery (when needed) should be considered carefully, with repairs preferred when possible to protect long-term knee function.
Ep. 197- Get Fit to Train: The Secret to Running Success at Any Age + HRV Medical Mailbag
Q: What is your advice for older athletes who want to take up running or pursue longer distances?
The guest advocates a mindset of belief in possibility, starting with small, achievable goals, and gradually increasing volume. He stresses not rushing speed work, prioritizing base endurance and strength training, and getting fit to train before chasing longer distances or faster paces.
Ep. 197- Get Fit to Train: The Secret to Running Success at Any Age + HRV Medical Mailbag
Q: Tell me a little about your marathon history. How did you get into running?
Mike explains starting running later in life after a period away from sport, training for a half marathon with his son, then progressing through 5K, 10K, and beyond, ultimately achieving notable times and a British record at age 70. He emphasizes gradual progression, learning to enjoy the process, and building confidence through small, consistent improvements.
Ep. 196-Permission Granted: How to Drop the Guilt and Own Your Training +Omega 3s
Q: How can someone begin to say no without feeling guilty or letting others down?
Start with small boundaries, practice saying no in low-stakes situations, and align decisions with clearly defined personal values to build confidence over time.
