  • One of my ‘go to’ podcasts

This is one of my ‘go to’ pods when I am seeking education, enlightenment and new angles with regards to performance psychology. Dan had me on the show over a year ago and he was insightful and challenging - he clearly has expertise and his own points of view but also dives into hearty discussion with an open mind. I enjoy having two experts discussing topics rather than an interviewer and interviewee.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

#344 Dan Abrahams - Mark Peters Speaks to Dan About his new Book
Q: What are some practical tips for a coach who wants to foster a culture of participation rather than mere reception?
Start with language that invites input, create autonomy-supportive coaching, and implement frameworks like shared language and a few core mental skills to normalize self-regulation. The goal is to move players from being told what to do to actively shaping how they think and respond.
#344 Dan Abrahams - Mark Peters Speaks to Dan About his new Book
Q: How does the Elite Competitor Model interact with the mindset scale in real games?
The model sits on top of a mindset scale from 1 to 10, where the mindset drives how players respond to events on the field. It helps players translate intention and attention into consistent actions, and it guides coaches in designing practices that build that adaptive resilience.
#344 Dan Abrahams - Mark Peters Speaks to Dan About his new Book
Q: What inspired you to move from short-form social media content back to a long-form book, and how did that shape Compete?
I wanted to distill two decades of coaching and research into a framework that players can actually use, not just read about. The longer form lets me connect theory to practical drills, stories, and language that make the concepts accessible and actionable for both players and coaches.
#342 Dr Séamus Harvey & Dr Chin Wei Ong - Assessing Mental Well-Being in Sport
Q: What sparked the development of the mental well-being screening process in the academy setting?
Chin explains the need to shift from a purely performance-centric approach to holistic player development, incorporating well-being screening to address the high-pressure environment and the importance of multi-stakeholder perspectives.
#342 Dr Séamus Harvey & Dr Chin Wei Ong - Assessing Mental Well-Being in Sport
Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself and your background.
Séamus describes his role as a postdoctoral researcher focused on digital health, health psychology, sport psychology, and talent development, with deep involvement in Gaelic sports and education on performance psychology.
