  • Not a Great Experience for My First Listen

The first episode I chose to listen to was the episode on the role of diet in injury prevention with Dr. Ian Seels. I was incredibly disappointed with the misinformation being shared in this episode, given that low carb diets for endurance athletes have not proven beneficial according to more recent research. Dr. Seels also states in the episode that many elite long distance runners and athletes are low carb, and that is also false. At best, this episode is an inconvenience, and at worst it can ... more

  • Mostly good, informative content sullied by low-carb charlatans

I appreciate the motivation behind the podcast as a whole and enjoy most of the content. My experience listening to it, however, is sometimes spoiled by the appearance of dinosaurs who continue to espouse a counterproductive and even harmful low-carb dietary dogma. The most recent episode (at the time of writing) marks at least the second time in the past several months that I've had to abandon an episode within 10 minutes because I could not stand to sit through the utter nonsense that these cl... more

  • Loved the injury prevention, the research not so much

5 stars for the early episodes - they helped me a lot with rehabbing from plantar fasciitis as a recreational runner.

2 stars for the latest episodes on research reviews. These are getting out of the author’s expertise (physiotherapy) and without coaching and deep domain knowledge there is a risk to miss the forest from the trees or worst, influence your training in the wrong direction. In a couple of recent examples, the author failed to highlight important nuances about the topic or critically... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Re-Run: The Most Effective Calf & Achilles Management with Luke Nelson (Nov, 2021)
Q: How do you determine when a runner is ready to return to running after a calf or Achilles issue?
Use a criteria-based approach rather than time-based alone, including achieving specific strength and plyometric benchmarks, symmetry in tests, ability to perform hopping and jumping movements, and progressive loading that mirrors real running demands before reintroducing running.
Re-Run: The Most Effective Calf & Achilles Management with Luke Nelson (Nov, 2021)
Q: What are the common denominators or contributing factors you see for calf and Achilles injuries in runners?
Contributing factors are multifactorial, with previous injury history and age being two major predictors, along with training loads, biomechanics, and overall strength. A runner's history and how well prior injuries were rehabilitated strongly influence recurrence risk.
Exclusive AMA Release: Physio vs Dr / Back-to-Back Runs / Running with Back Tightness
Q: What role does cadence or running form play in back tightness during longer runs?
Increasing cadence can reduce impact forces and reduce protective gripping by the erector spinae, contributing to a more relaxed run posture and less low-back tightness.
Exclusive AMA Release: Physio vs Dr / Back-to-Back Runs / Running with Back Tightness
Q: What should be done to keep lower back muscles from getting tight when running?
Incorporate mobility work, maintain relaxed running form, consider cadence adjustments to reduce ground reaction forces, and add targeted strengthening such as lumbar extensions and controlled back exercises to build capacity and reduce tightness.
Exclusive AMA Release: Physio vs Dr / Back-to-Back Runs / Running with Back Tightness
Q: During rehab, when can you reintroduce back-to-back running days?
Gradual reintroduction is possible when symptoms return to baseline quickly (typically within 12-24 hours) after a run, starting with conservative sessions and progressively increasing load while monitoring recovery.
