  • Matt Is Solid

But he needs to easy up on the praise for movies that are panned rightly so.

“The film’s editing lacks snap, making clear the demarcation between when “cut” and “action” were yelled. Sometimes Murphy will have an emotion in one shot that will totally disappear in another, undermining the dialogue’s give-and-go rhythm” NYT review of Beverly Hills Cop: Axle F.

And now “ Bad Sisters”: Hearing about all the work for a just an OK series was a struggle cause.

  • Dim-witted

The host has actually admitted (to the film’s editor!) he watched a German film with English overdubs. God forbid you listen in German and read the subtitles. What a slap in the face. You should be ashamed of yourself. The directors all hate the English overdubs and do what they can to stop it. Just another dumb American who’s never seen more than a handful of foreign films. Would you watch 8 1/2 with English actors overdubbing??

  • Matt Saved My Los Angeles Commute

This podcast is so entertaining, so insightful, and just so darn fun. I spend almost as many hours on the road as I do at work. And Matt's brilliant questions spark such great nuggets of conversation from a lot of the fellow editors that I admire and look up to. What a treat this program is, and thank you Matt for bringing this to all of us. AVID rocks and so does this show. Keep the goods coming!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Hokum
Q: What unique editing challenges did Hokum present, and how did you address them in post?
The editor discusses balancing a single, contained location with ongoing tension; he uses wide shots to absorb detail, manipulates jump scares with speed ramps and negative space in sound, and relies on late-stage substitutions of plates to sustain suspense.
Hokum
Q: How did your collaboration with Damian McCarthy begin for Hokum and evolve across the project?
Davis explains that McCarthy often gives him creative room to respond to rushes rather than micromanage early on; trust grows as they complete a successful previous project together, making the editing process feel more like collaboration with a friend.
Project Hail Mary
Q: What was the key challenge in creating Rocky's language, and how did you approach it?
Rocky's language required a living, performative approach combining human and animal sounds. We treated it as a performance rather than a scripted sample, evolving the vocabulary and adjusting words to fit emotions and context.
Project Hail Mary
Q: How do you balance the workload between the two sound designers on a complex project like this?
We work together, collect sounds shoulder to shoulder, and then build collaboratively, aiming to make ourselves happy and get goosebumps before presenting ideas to the directors.
Sinners
Q: What were the biggest challenges you faced during production?
The biggest thing was capturing both characters played by Michael B. Jordan and ensuring their distinct personalities came through in post.
