  • Gum chewing?

I’ve enjoyed this podcast for years! There have been a number of episodes that it sounds like you’re chewing gum while the guest is talking. I can hear breathing and presumably gum-chewing. It is hard to listen to. It would be good to be on mute or maybe ditch the gum.

  • Congrats Lindsey from the 3rd place woman!

I’m a long time listener of the podcast but especially loved the most recent episode with Lindsey Bradley. I was the 3rd overall woman at Indy and it was fun to hear about the front of the race. And it’s always great to hear about other women who are trying to train hard while having full-time jobs and lives outside running. Thanks for a great episode!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

#728 - Nick Lee: Cape Cod Traverse Self-Supported FKT
Q: How did you approach fueling, pacing, and mental strategies during such a demanding self-supported effort?
Nick emphasizes a balance of running with planned fueling stops, walking during fueling to recover, staying mindful of hydration and electrolytes, and using mental techniques and personal motivation (family, name on the FKTs site) to push through low moments.
#728 - Nick Lee: Cape Cod Traverse Self-Supported FKT
Q: What was the Cape Cod Traverse like in terms of route, distance, and terrain, and how did you train given it's largely road?
The course spans about 64 miles (roughly 100K) with a mix of road, bike paths, and occasional rough sections; training involved long, slow runs to build endurance, plus simulating road pounding and doing focused prep in flat areas like Cape Cod's trails and NH terrain when possible.
#727 - Canyon Woodward: The Unexpected Rise to the Top of Trail and Ultra
Q: How do you balance the desire to race and the love of mountains when planning training and race calendars?
He emphasizes keeping training enjoyable and sustainable while also acknowledging the importance of focused, strategic decisions for specific races, citing examples of runners who have found that balance to win major events.
#727 - Canyon Woodward: The Unexpected Rise to the Top of Trail and Ultra
Q: Can you give us a metric-driven evolution of your speed development over the last five or six years?
Canyon explains that six years ago his training was mileage-based with little focus on speed, and now he uses short repeats (around one minute on, one minute off) and uphill treadmill work, which has yielded meaningful gains.
#726 - Patrick Yalon: From a Near Death Experience to Moab 240
Q: What would you tell your younger self based on what you've learned throughout your experiences?
He would advise himself that it's okay, to love and accept oneself, to not sweat the small stuff, and to focus on the present moment.
