  • Asking questions, or giving speeches?

I am not sure if this female podcast is making speeches, or asking questions? The reason is because her questions contain about 25 commas each, before she actually gets to the question. If she gets there at all. Would you please formulate the question in your mind first, before you start babbling? Or, simply make a statement. But trying to make 162 statements and then finish with some sort of rounded out question is irritating beyond belief.

  • An exceptional episode

Based solely on this podcast's position (the lead) in relation to myriad others discussing 'That Hideous Strength', I award the highest honor it is within my gift to bestow, the CS Lewis dramatic exit.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

An Artist Reinterprets Classic Nature Poems
Q: So those are two distinct things to love. How did you come to care about poetry and how did you come to care about comics and images?
The guest explains that comics captured his interest early, influenced by European traditions where comics could address weighty subjects, and that poetry grew on him later, especially through teachers who recited poems from memory and through personal exposure to different literary languages.
Unexpected Beauty
Q: Is there any way that we can clear away the mental, inner world to better recognize beauty?
Engaging in gratitude practices and moments of silence allows individuals to cultivate awareness and recognition of beauty, countering natural tendencies to focus on negativity.
Unexpected Beauty
Q: Can you give an example of how beauty can help us flourish and also how it can hinder us?
Beauty helps us flourish by enabling us to attune to quality and create meaningful work, while it can hinder us through misleading notions, such as the belief that beautiful theories in science guarantee truth, which may lead to misconstrued conclusions.
Unexpected Beauty
Q: How did you end up on the kind of strand of research focused on beauty in work and flourishing?
Brandon unintentionally stumbled onto the topic of beauty while studying social movements and scientists' motivations for their work, which revealed that beauty plays an essential role in their fulfillment and dedication to science. This realization prompted his in-depth inquiry into beauty's relevance in various fields.
Unexpected Beauty
Q: How did you come to study flourishing, and what does it mean to flourish?
Brandon began his journey in computer science but shifted towards philosophy upon conversion to Catholicism, which led him to the concept of flourishing, rooted in Aristotle's idea of happiness and a good life. This exploration connected him with human flourishing literature and quantitative measures from his involvement with the Harvard Flourishing Program.
