Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Hard power and the sustainability-security nexus
Q: What is your view on multilateralism versus flexible coalitions in driving climate and energy objectives?
Flexible coalitions, or variable geometry, can move faster on targeted issues like hydrogen or methane, but they lack the global weight of full international consensus. The practical path forward is to use these coalitions for tangible, high-impact projects while working to keep broader goals like net zero on track through a mix of top-down and bottom-up efforts.
Hard power and the sustainability-security nexus
Q: What role can governments play to unlock private capital for climate resilience?
Governments should consider co-financing or guarantees to de-risk projects, reform subsidies that distort economics, and implement reporting standards that improve information and incentives for investors, thereby mobilizing private capital at scale.
Hard power and the sustainability-security nexus
Q: How do you balance the immediate energy crisis with long-term decarbonization goals?
The short answer is that resilience is costly, but necessary. In the short term, we deal with the crisis through diversification and security-focused investments; in the longer term, we realign incentives, deploy technology like renewables and storage, and gradually price externalities such as carbon to drive more efficient capital allocation.
Taking tokenised securities to a new level
Q: What regulatory gaps or policy developments are needed to give market participants confidence to engage with tokenized assets, especially in Europe?
Regulations need to be technology-neutral to accommodate tokenization, with clear guidance comparable to the US no-action letters, enabling CSDs and market participants to deploy tokenized infrastructures without unintended restrictions while preserving investor protections and market integrity.
Taking tokenised securities to a new level
Q: Can you talk a little bit about how interacting with tokenized securities changes operations on your end and then also for the client side, how their experience differs between tokenized and traditional securities?
Tokenized securities are real assets reflected on a blockchain, with emphasis on ensuring interoperability and not forcing clients to abandon existing systems; the aim is to preserve data quality, enable seamless hybrid workflows, and gradually move assets and processes onto digital infrastructures while maintaining choice for clients.
