  • Love this podcast!

Always informative with wonderful guests. Just listened to Episode 100 about the intersection of OCD and spirituality. Very helpful. As an OCD treatment specialist, it’s often difficult to watch what had once been a source of comfort (spiritual practices) become torturous for clients. Great discussion!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

186. The Wildest OCD Recovery Story I’ve Heard
Q: How did naming the OCD help your daughter cope and push back against it?
Giving the OCD a name—Lil Bit—allowed her to externalize it, treat it as a separate opponent, and build strategies to counter it, which accelerated her resilience and progress.
186. The Wildest OCD Recovery Story I’ve Heard
Q: What was that treatment process like for your daughter and family?
It started with recognizing OCD after multiple misdiagnoses, followed by a structured outpatient ERP program, medication to reduce anxiety enough for exposure, and intense family involvement to learn and practice the therapies at home and in school settings.
185. You’re stuck because you’re doing ERP halfway
Q: What is the most common objection you hear about ERP, and how do you address it?
People often fear the exposure will be too scary or unmanageable; my approach is to treat it as a testable hypothesis, encouraging the client to actually test the limit rather than assume it's impossible, while ensuring the exposure is structured to teach the brain the correct message.
183. If Your Child Gets Stuck in Routines, Please Listen to This...
Q: What would you tell a parent who suspects their child is struggling with OCD?
Explain the signs beyond typical development, emphasize psychoeducation and normalization, introduce ERP with age-appropriate adaptations, and encourage seeking professional help early to provide tools and support.
183. If Your Child Gets Stuck in Routines, Please Listen to This...
Q: How did you get into this work with childhood OCD and anxiety?
Dr. Lustig describes a long journey from general child development work to focusing on OCD, with a passion sparked by witnessing how early identification and effective treatment can change lives for kids and families.
