Do you feel like you're just "not a gym person"? You're not alone. Many adults over 50 believe that strength training isn't for someone like them - that they've left it too late, or that lifting weights is only for the young and already-fit. Never Too Old to Lift exists to change that belief. Hosted by Chris Tiley, a physiotherapist with 15+ years of experience, this podcast shows you that strengt... more

  • Great informative podcast

I enjoy listening and learning from this podcast. As an “older PT” who has had limited training in weight lifting and one who works with older adults in skilled nursing, I am excited to personally embark on a dedicated strength training journey and to educate and reinforce to my clients the importance of strength training for optimal aging.

  • Do it!

I didn’t have a clue where to start. I had always tried and failed to get started in my weightlifting journey. I knew it was the best thing I could do for myself, but that was it. Chris has taught me so much and answered so many questions. Each episode is no nonsense and packed with valuable advise. I am lifting and learning and getting stronger for life.

  • So helpful!

After injuring myself earlier in the year lifting weights I’ve realised I did too much too soon. This podcast has been such a wealth of information on how to start lifting and progress safely and is making me feel much more confident in how to go about things this time round . I have just ordered the Never too old to Lift book from Amazon and am excited to start!

  • Well done to Chris!

Great introduction Chris and I am really looking forward to learning and listening to all your guests (and thank you for inviting me to be part of this great podcast series). I have just finished listening to the nutrition and supplements episode. There is always something new to learn or tip to pick up and Catriona was easy to listen to with a no nonsense approach which is refreshing and easy to understand. I will certainly be saving that episode as a point of reference.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

March Q&A: When Everything Flares Your Knee Up (Plus Bone Health & Training Time) - Ep 044
Q: I'm struggling to find time to train; is one to two exercises daily better than two one-hour sessions later on?
Yes, anything is better than nothing, and short, consistent exercise bites can be more sustainable and eventually ramp up to more intensive sessions when time allows.
From Health Scare to Medication Free: Starting Strength Training at 62 - Ep 010
Q: How did you transition the plan from the eBook to your routine, and was it home-based or did you use a gym?
I did everything at home with very basic equipment—small weights, bands, and later some simple bars—and I followed the 12-week structure from the eBook, progressively increasing as I went.
From Health Scare to Medication Free: Starting Strength Training at 62 - Ep 010
Q: What was your previous relationship with exercise and did you ever try strength training before starting at 62?
I had done some cardio and light activity, but I avoided weight training due to fear of getting bulky and not wanting to bulk up; I had some dabbling but nothing consistent until I found a plan that worked for me.
Hip Replacements, Bulging Discs & Varicose Veins: Your Strength Training Questions Answered - Ep 008
Q: What is the best way to start with one weaker arm without causing imbalance?
Train the weaker arm with focused unilateral work, particularly when the stronger arm is used to support brain-muscle signaling; this cross-educational approach helps maintain strength in the weaker limb while also ensuring the stronger limb continues to contribute to overall progression.
Hip Replacements, Bulging Discs & Varicose Veins: Your Strength Training Questions Answered - Ep 008
Q: What are the best exercises for bulging discs in the lower back?
Begin with hip hinge-based movements that don't aggravate symptoms, such as bridges or hip thrusts, and progress gradually to more demanding movements like deadlifts (preferably Romanian deadlift) with meticulous form and light resistance, while focusing on back control and avoiding excessive arching.
