I have a parent who suffers from a personality disorder. I have found some helpful information online, but it often stops at simplistic ideas like setting boundaries. This man gets it. Every episode is a revelation. And he is compassionate to everyone involved without excusing hurtful behavior. An angel sent to help us.

This episode is loaded with help for the person with a covert narcissist partner! Hopefully Dr Mazzella will continue to have more episodes similar to this one. For the ones who realize they, for their own reason, need to navigate this land mind. It’s beyond exhausting. Can’t imagine what I’d be doing or thinking about daily if or when I’m free of this.

How to Heal from a Destructive Narcissistic Relationship | Epi 141
Q: Before we get into the elements that lead to healing, how do you define destructive or controlling narcissistic parents?
Narcissistic parents distort reality to maintain control: a distorted sense of self that feels grandiose, a distorted sense of others as to be used or diminished, and a worldview that includes entitlement and rules that mostly apply to others. Their influence can be crushing because they shape the child's development and self-view in ways that are often damaging long-term.
How to Heal from a Destructive Narcissistic Relationship | Epi 143
Q: How can a client begin to hold on to themselves when in a relationship with someone who has narcissistic traits?
They suggest slowing down, reflecting on where their needs are unmet, and working toward a more nuanced understanding of the other person and the situation. The discussion highlights the tension between seeking the narcissist's approval and preserving personal autonomy, and it emphasizes the importance of self-regulation, meaning-making, and deliberate action over impulsive responses.
How to Heal from a Destructive Narcissistic Relationship | Epi 143
Q: What is the practical approach to handling the intense anger that arises in this scenario?
The host and guest discuss validating the client's feelings to create safety, then guiding them to examine what the anger represents (loss, fear, or threat to autonomy). They emphasize exploring the underlying grief and re-framing abandonment as an activating trigger rather than a straightforward, conscious act by the partner, which helps the client begin to choose healthier behavioral responses rather than acting from a place of pure reaction.

Q: Did you start to then recognize things that became concerning?
Dr. Kerry acknowledges that she noticed red flags early on but was desperate to recreate her previous relationship, leading her to overlook them.
How I Fell for a Narcissist When I Was Most Vulnerable| Epi 120
