  • This podcast is an absolute gem!

What impressed me from the very beginning is the incredibly professional and calm way in which the complex topic of narcissism is explained. In a media landscape where terms like "gaslighting" or "blame shifting" are often used hastily and sensationally, this podcast takes the time to look at things with real depth and nuance without ever downplaying the experiences and feelings of those affected. I especially appreciate that some episodes end with a concrete, forward-looking perspective. The ep... more

  • Must listen

I have a parent who suffers from a personality disorder. I have found some helpful information online, but it often stops at simplistic ideas like setting boundaries. This man gets it. Every episode is a revelation. And he is compassionate to everyone involved without excusing hurtful behavior. An angel sent to help us.

This episode is loaded with help for the person with a covert narcissist partner! Hopefully Dr Mazzella will continue to have more episodes similar to this one. For the ones who realize they, for their own reason, need to navigate this land mind. It’s beyond exhausting. Can’t imagine what I’d be doing or thinking about daily if or when I’m free of this.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Can a Borderline Parent Create Narcissistic Traits in their Child? | Epi 150
Q: Is there a connection? Can growing up with a parent who has a borderline structure shape the development of narcissistic traits in the child?
The host explains that there isn't a simple cause-and-effect path; rather, the environment shapes adaptive defenses. The child may develop outwardly competent, independent traits as a protective strategy, while vulnerability remains suppressed or split off, which can resemble narcissistic traits.
The Dance Between Codependents and Narcissists: Can Therapy Really Help? | Epi 147
Q: What keeps the codependent in the relationship if the dynamics are so damaging?
Ross argues that attachment trauma and pathological loneliness create a powerful fear of being alone, which perpetuates the cycle and makes the codependent stay even as the relationship becomes harmful.
The Dance Between Codependents and Narcissists: Can Therapy Really Help? | Epi 147
Q: Do they feel seen at the moment, when the narcissist is idealizing them or love bombing?
Ross explains that the codependent often seeks to be seen through the narcissist's gaze and that this dynamic fuels their stay in the relationship, driven by familiarity and trauma bonding rather than genuine mutual growth.
How to Heal from a Destructive Narcissistic Relationship | Epi 141
Q: Before we get into the elements that lead to healing, how do you define destructive or controlling narcissistic parents?
Narcissistic parents distort reality to maintain control: a distorted sense of self that feels grandiose, a distorted sense of others as to be used or diminished, and a worldview that includes entitlement and rules that mostly apply to others. Their influence can be crushing because they shape the child's development and self-view in ways that are often damaging long-term.
How to Heal from a Destructive Narcissistic Relationship | Epi 143
Q: How can a client begin to hold on to themselves when in a relationship with someone who has narcissistic traits?
They suggest slowing down, reflecting on where their needs are unmet, and working toward a more nuanced understanding of the other person and the situation. The discussion highlights the tension between seeking the narcissist's approval and preserving personal autonomy, and it emphasizes the importance of self-regulation, meaning-making, and deliberate action over impulsive responses.
