  • Rick is as Good a Raconteur as he is on Keys!

Rick is as good a raconteur as he is on keys, and that’s saying something! Each episode is funny and informative. Side kick Jeeves is a great foil too. Fantastic podcast.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

South Side Of The Sky & Help with Photos
Q: Heart Of The Sunrise was discussed with a fan inquiry about a keyboard sound at the start; can you explain what instruments contributed to that opening?
The opening used a mellow-tron for the keyboard-like choir-like texture, with Hammond and other synth-like elements blended in during the early sections to build the characteristic dynamic of the piece.
South Side Of The Sky & Help with Photos
Q: How did the band create the wind sound effect that is heard at the beginning and the end?
The wind was taken from a BBC sound effects record, a common source at the time, and then used as a texture to frame the piece rather than being a custom-made effect.
Hammond Organs
Q: How do you go about creating a setlist that will appeal to fans who have seen you numerous times, but also keep it interesting for you as a performer?
Rick explains he starts by imagining himself as a fan, choosing pieces he believes fans would want to hear, and then builds a balanced mix from classics, instrumental suites, and yes material, while also weaving in new material to keep the performance fresh.
John Bonham, Hotel Bills & Streaming
Q: How do you see the shift from vinyl to streaming affecting artists financially?
Streaming pays small amounts per track unless you are a huge name; however, it can still be a steady supplementary revenue stream if managed with control over publishing and special editions.
ARW, Tormato & Alan White's Fence
Q: Do you remember playing the fast marimba at the beginning of The Ancient, and how did you manage to do it given the Mellotron's limitations?
Rick explains that he recorded the parts multiple times on tape and then edited them together, which allowed the effect to be achieved despite the Mellotron's mechanical constraints.
