  • Robin Hood

I hadn’t realized how we have come to associate Robin Hood with Christmas customs. I was interested in this episode because my father was the stunt double for Alan Hale in the 1930s Robin Hood movie starring Alan Ladd.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

On the Supremacy of the Pope with Patrick Nold
Q: Well, the text was written in Avignon. So when the popes had moved to Avignon from Rome in the first quarter of the 14th century. So I believe the context, the best way to situate this text is with regard to probably the most famous papal document of the Middle Ages, and that's Boniface the Eighth's Unam Sanctam of 1302, in which he says that it is altogether necessary for the salvation of every human creature to be subject to the Roman pontiff. When was this written and where was it written?
The text was written in Avignon, during the early 14th century, set against the ascendant claim of papal supremacy represented by Unam Sanctam and the papal court's relocation there, which provides the contextual frame for the discussion on papal power.
Sir Tristrem with Thomas H. Crofts
Q: Why do you love this version of Sir Tristrem?
I love this version because it represents an early moment in Middle English literary culture where translation into vernacular was happening, making literature accessible to audiences through performance and direct expression.
Sir Tristrem with Thomas H. Crofts
Q: Can you tell us what happens in the story of Sir Tristrem?
The story follows Tristrem, a young knight who is sent to fetch Isolde, a bride for his uncle King Mark. They inadvertently drink a love potion, leading to a tragic love that is marred by societal constraints.
Medieval Silesia with Sébastien Rossignol
Q: What tensions arose from the integration of different cultures and communities in Silesia?
Most tensions appeared in the context of the church, where the established Polish church felt threatened by the new arrivals, particularly mendicant orders which preached in German.
Medieval Silesia with Sébastien Rossignol
Q: Can you tell us a little bit about why and how they started to really encourage immigration from elsewhere?
The rulers wanted to have more peasants to work on their land to enhance economic development.
