What if California seceded from the United States? If it did, what would happen? Would it usher in a new era of peace and prosperity? Or plunge the US into a new civil war? This is The Last Resort, a new documentary podcast following the rise, fall, and rebirth of CAL EXIT: the campaign for Californian Independence. It’s a story about a dream for a new progressive utopia on the West Coast. It’s about the fight for America’s future. And it’s also a tale of two friends who started on the political fringe and ended up in the middle of a still-unfolding global criminal conspiracy involving the FBI and Russian Intelligence.Coming October 18th from Interval Presents and Awfully Nice. Narrated by Xiuhtezcatl.

  • Complete and Comprehensive

Appreciate that could have been a simplistic takedown of the Calexit debacle was instead a hard look at water rights, political proportional representation, indigenous history, and even an examination of the narrowness of 'freedom' that supporters of succession movements believe in.

  • Interesting Premise, not the best execution

I enjoyed the story being told, but did feel it was let down by the host’s attempts to center the narrative around himself (ie by promoting his music career or his activism barely tangential to the states topic). more

  • Self absorbed and ad ridden

So, as one of those people in the Deep South that Californians continue to talk about with such intense derision without ever visiting or attempting to know or understand, this podcast is as hurtful as the rest. It’s like listening to MRAs. Sure, there’s valuable feedback, but it always comes with this pointed cruelty toward another group. It’s ugly. It’s bad rhetoric. more

  • Thoughtful, informative and wise

We’ll worth the investment of time to learn about California’s separatist movement. Host Xiuhtezcatl presents thorough investigative journalism with themes of freedom and conflict. What starts out as a story about how and why some Californians want the state to become an independent country becomes a deeply thoughtful argument for facing our differences and remaining in community. His conclusion is rooted in indigenous values and experience.
