I am renovating my first house and garden and find your tips invaluable. I appreciate you both for saving me from committing a multitude of design sins, whilst keeping me entertained on my weekly jaunt to the office. I grew up in a household of boys so have also enjoyed all the style and skincare chat and general gossip.

Q: How to choose trees that complement each other in a small garden?
In a small garden, it's rare to choose three different trees; instead, select two of the same type and one different to create a coherent look.

Q: Does adding ceiling roses in a mid-century semi-detached add character or is it naff?
Not necessarily naff, but ceiling roses work in spaces where architecturally they would have been originally. If it's a mid-century house, they may look out of place, so it depends on the existing features.
